1997 Subaru Legacy 2.2 wont turn over! HELP PLEASE

Recommended Posts

I just bought this car. Started fine when I picked it up. Drives great. Real strong and smooth. Parked it at a buddies house and then it wouldn't turn over. Just a click. It's a 5 speed Manual tranny and I was on a hill so I compression started it. Drove like normal. Strong and smooth. Starter maybe?? I'm in school and poor!

HEEELLLPP!:)

My first guess, is the battery. I've experienced quite a few electrical issues with these Subaru's... Anytime it's just one click, after sitting for a little while, the battery doesn't have enough juice to crank the motor.

It is probably related few other things... The starter may not be grounded, the alternator may not be charging the battery, you have an electrical drain, etc...

Were the battery/brake like ever on at the same time while the motor was running?

I dont think the battery or brake light was on while it runs. I still get all the proper dash lights and what not. It wasnt sitting awhile. I drove it, let it sit for 45 minutes and then the click. Would it still compression start with a bad battery??

Okay. I was doing a bunch of reading online and saw a Youtube where a guy just kept turning and turning and his car finally started. so i went outside and turned the key a bunch and nothing. then i remembered i saw something about shifting so i put the car into 2nd (5MT) and it started right up. turned it off and it started up again in Neutral.

anyone know why it would start when i put it in gear?? just starter going bad?

I ordered a starter repair kit on ebay for 15$ with contact points and a plunger.

well there is a Neutral safety switch which only lets the car start when the clutch is depressed.

was the clutch in when you tried to start in N?

i would clean the battery connections.

this and a weak battery are the leading cause of a no start issue.

ESPECIALLY if you get a click.

the click means it is getting juice, just not enough.

another possible cause is the contacts in the starter solenoid.

they get old, charred and worn and do not conduct as they should.

the parts are cheap ($15) and it isn't a very hard job.

there is a great write up on this with pics and a source for the parts.

you can test for this cause by jumping 12volts directly from the battery to the small spade connector on the starter solenoid when the key will not start the engine.

if the jumper wire starts the engine then the problem is in the solenoid, or maybe the starter.

but the starter motors are pretty strong and don't go bad as often as the contacts, imho.

you could buy a reman-starter, but with new contacts and plunger in the solenoid you can reman your own.

so battery connections first, then solenoid contacts if needed.

A quick Google search (which is where I got the above photos) reveals these to be, presumably, Denso replacement parts. If you search these part numbers you get several options for sites from which you can order them. Hope this helps anyone looking around, since the one thing I did not see on other threads about this issue were actual part numbers. Cheers!
