  1. I haven't heard of them failing catastrophically on non-turbo cars, but they will eventually start leaking into the combustion chambers and then you have to have it done because you can't drive without the car overheating. If you overheat these engines then the heads or the block is damaged from being warped.
  2. If you've got 200k on the car it's up to you whether to have them done. I used the expensive head gasket sealer and it just prolonged the inevitable. It's a $1200 to $1800 job depending on where you have it done. You can diy and they aren't super difficult to change out, just labor intensive and parts and the right tools. I had mine done because it wad miserable driving becauase it leaked oil and coolant on the exhaust and it smelled bad all the time. Plus it was annoying adding oil and antifreeze.
  3. Yah, Subarus are toigh cars. No you're not the only one. Sunroofs leak over time. Drains clog or seals wear out/fail. Just keep an eye on it. A car wash isn't the sane as a downpour or constant rain. Thanks!
  4. I've had the leak ever since I've owned the car, so 7 years and no damage to the headliner at all! No stains and no sags. It's just been staining the carpet in the rear cargo area. My leak is consistently coming out of the hole in the headliner where the middle seat belt comes out. There have also been leaks from the maplight deal, but it's mostly from that hole in the back and only when it rains a lot. When I back up the car, out comes the river! I had the headliner off a couple years ago aby blew out the drain tubes with air. I also checked it for leaks and couldn't find any. It's a mystery.
  5. Does your car have a sunroof (the dual one on the GT wagon or Outbacks)? If so then that is one place. I did the same thing with mine as I've had a perpetual leak in the back since I've had my wagon. I just deal with it 8) Pull off the headliner and have someone run a garden hose over the roof while you look for leaks inside. It might take a while. If it's leaking or of the spot the antenna went through, then it's possible that is the source as water runs downhill. The main issue is having water sitting around on metal as it will eventually rust. It also corrodes the contacts in the tail lights and makes your bulbs burn out.
  6. Hey thanks for the tips. I'll take a look at the drive shafts. I tore into the front end last Thursday and got a new axle from Autozone (no questions asked return). Put it in and it's still making the noise, just not as bad. I don't know where it's coming from now. I might just put it up on jack stands and sit under it while putting it into reverse to see what's making noise. I agree with John that it's highly unlikely it was the hub or wheel bearing. We inspected the splines and they look fine- nothing abnormal. I might just live with it. I don't know. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!
  7. Thanks. It's definitely coming from the front end. I suspected trans mount, but I don't think that's it. My shop is a very honest place and does good work, but you never know...we humans are known to make mistakes. I'm tearing into it today to have a look. I bought the axles from Autozone in Feb so they're pay much new. If the axle is somehow bad then it'll go back. Hopefully that fixes it. If not then ill go from there. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again
  8. Hey all. I have been having an issue with a noise from the front end when going into reverse. It's a very metallic clunk. It started after I had the car back from the mechanics following a HG job. They removed the axles to take out the engine (I know because I changed the axles before I took it in), so I took it back to the shop and had them look at it. They gave me a diagnosis and it said that the drive axle splines at the outboard hub are worn and making noise when reverse torque is applied. They recommended that the front axle and/or hub be replaced. I don't think they did a thorough inspection on it (like took the axle out). Anyone else had this issue? How hard is it to replace the hub if I have to? They quoted me $400 to do it. It's an automatic. 02 LGT. Thanks!
  9. That's amazing! Who would have known that? I never knew that a PCM (computer) could cause a fuel pump to act wonky. Computers can cause some strange issues though, sometimes disguising themselves as other problems. Had a friend with a mid 90's Oldsmobile Ninety Eight that backfired, sputtered, and lost power when it was floored. It wasn't a mechanical issue, but a problem with the computer (no check engine light back then) that made it think the car was going 100 mph and cut the fuel off. It was a simple fix, took a mechanic 5 minutes to reset something and it ran just fine after that. Go figure!
  10. Does the car stumble or buck or backfire? If it's not doing that then it could be your transmission. Sometimes if there's a problem with some internal component (stuck solenoid/valve, worn bands or a bad clutch) some gears won't work right. You might get 1st gear good from a stop, but second gear won't work and it will go right to third which would cause a problem like you are describing. Do you have any problems with reverse? An air fuel mixture problem could be causing this but if there's no check engine light then it doesn't sound like this is the case. How's your gas mileage? Do you notice any strange smells? Your mechanic may have missed something. A clogged catalytic converter might cause this, but I haven't see it happen very often.
