  1. '96 Legacy L - 206,000 mi. - Still uses only 1/8 qt. of oil every 3000 mi.
  2. Thank you and goodbye "hogzaust", I have had the hogzaust system up and operating for almost a year. - I am on a budget, but I found a reasonably priced axle back, (SPT #soa8376300 for 1996 Legacy - $179.00, a rare find esp. new), so I will be trying this out. - I will always have fond memories of my "good 'ole" hogzaust though, it was there when I needed it to work with other mods.
  3. 1996 2.2 single port - I decided to improve the intake since I already did the exhaust side, (MS3 uel header, "Hogzaust"). I found an old Option Racing 3" short ram for '97 to '01 Imprezas online for cheap. I then hack-sawed it and joined the pieces together with 3" flexible silicone couplers, (it came with the required 3" to 2.75" reducer for intake manifold attachment). It runs in a big smooth loop directly to the MAF unit and stock airbox, I think that the panel air filter will flow more than enough air, and I didn't want any dead spots or engine codes. - To make a long story short, with this intake/exhaust combo, plus a 1lb. crank pulley and a good tune, this lightweight Legacy flies! - I got the hybrid intake idea on NASIOC.
  4. .... Here's what I like, with a 1/16 in. "Hogzaust" gap the exhaust is still whisper quiet at Idle, but any pressure on the gas and the car comes alive. - Sort of a self-adjusting free-flow exhaust, the more I accelerate, the more gasses escape from the gap, at WOT, very loud. By far the most restrictive point in the system is the small diameter tailpipe at the end of the stock muffler, the rest of the system w. header is decent sized tubing so - needless to say, the "Hogzaust" works perfectly on this old Subaru. - With all other mods included, I'm probably pushing, (and it feels like it), around 160-170hp out of this ej2.2, not bad in a lightweight 1996.
  5. That distinctive boxer sound comes mostly from an uel header on the 4 cylinder motors. I don't know specifically what type of exhaust layout the 6 has, - worth investigating though.
  6. My turn to laugh, - horsepower gains, (whatever they may be), can be made through the use of a less restrictive exhaust system, so whether you go with expensive stainless steel cans or the Hogzaust, the resulting HP gains will be approximately the same.
  7. Unless I am mistaken the exhaust gasses have to "leak" out somewhere or the engine will not run. - Some choose to use an expensive less restrictive muffler, and some choose to have some of the exhaust gases exit before reaching the stock muffler thus creating less restriction. And finally there are some who just leave everything the way it is and let the exhaust "leak" out the stock tailpipe. - each to his or her own, but ya gotta think outside the box sometimes.
  8. With the money I've saved on my new "Hogzaust" free-flowing cat back system, I'm getting new struts all the way around, (nice KYB's).
  9. !996 legacy L 2.2 single port heads - gotta love this engine, runs strong w. 4eat in this fairly lightweight car. UEL header, light crank pulley, suspension mods, etc. - 194,000 mi., Planning on rebuild when this motor gets tired, (no signs yet). New pistons, headwork, Delta cams, - I know I can make NA power with this engine. - Have grown fond of BD legacy body style.
  10. 1996 legacy 2.2, MS3 UEL header, light crank pulley, other mods, etc. - I love it!, one thick washer, (x2, of course), and I now have a deep boxer rumble!, not too loud, but intimidating. I guess I now have a low restriction muffler for free, I don't think a $500 dollar cat-back system would be that much of an improvement.
