  1. The car is a 1994 Subaru Legacy Station-wagon (non turbo). I wish to thank everyone for their help here. You have really helped me greatly. I was having starting issues but I replaced the water coolant sensor and the engine light is gone and the engines purrs really good. But its a bitter-sweet victory as the automatic transmission is having slippage. It would get really bad last year but the stick showed plenty of fluid. I would still put a half of quart in and it would stop for a month or two then start up all over again. When it did act up, the tact gauge would be going up to high rpms to get the car to move. It happens in 1st and 2nd gears and would be hard to get going at a full stop. Once it getting moving, it does fine till the next stop. I put in some Lucus Transmission fix and it did help some. I now only use the car to go to Walmart once a month for grocery shopping. It makes it the 2 miles to Walmart but has some difficulty getting back home. I have to go easy on the gas pedal to get it to engage. One night, I had to shift to 2nd gear to finish the journey home. I figured the fluid is getting hot and thinner on the drive back. The fluid is red but has shown some black at times when I checked it, which means some parts got burnt. I was thinking of releasing some of the fluid and replacing it with Lucus Transmission fix as it would add more grit to the fluid. I am a social security retiree and mechanic shop is way beyond my budget. I have had the car for 12 years and have been the sole mechanic for it. I need it for grocery shopping as I have two bad knees and a bad right hip. Carrying too much weight on a bus system that runs sunday schedule 24/7 isn't working for me. I was thinking of doing the releasing the fluid in July as I need to get it smog that month as registering the car is due in August. It's not going to make it to a smog shop (at least not without some difficulties and then there's the journey home) in the shape it is in. Any input would be welcomed, even if the news is bad.
  2. https://imgur.com/a/C2JKgDy I wanted to upload 2 pictures of where the ecu temp sensor was located on a 1994 Subaru legacy. I figure this would stay on the server here for reference if anyone needs the info as other pictures I've seen were different to my car. I couldn't get a socket in there so I used a 19mm wrench to take it off and put on the new one. Car is running very well. https://imgur.com/HPfMPyz
  3. I am going to get a big mirror and put it at the driver's floor aqnd use a bright light to see what is under the dash. Witha bad right hip and two bad knees, I will climb tight in there but I need it to be last resort. I will check on the IAC. I was wondering about the two different parts when I was searching on Rockauto a few days ago. PITA to replace? I'm used to it working on this car. I had it for 11 years but I think the transmission is going out. After 5 miles, it starts having bad slippage taking off. Tried Lucus Transmission Fix and it worked for 2 weeks and then it started coming bad. But I will hang on to my old friend. It's been a good car. I have recently moved into a senior citizen complex and have been emptying my storage as I can't afford both. Then we got hit by snow storms. But I will at least get it up and running but I haven't set a date but soon. Will order the part from Rockauto. I really could use it for groceries shopping as the bus system sucks here.
  4. There's wires under the dash that have black tape or duck tape on it. The tape is pretty old. So the other wire either still has tape on it or its bare showing. We've been hit with winter storms lately so it has slowed down the progress.
  5. No, I do not have an alarm with immobilzer. Your idea of being up side down is a good idea. Just hope I don't get stuck that way. The car has been having trouble initaling starting. I had to pump the gas pedal ALOT till it got cranking and then give it more gas to keep it from stalling. Once reved up for 2-3 minutes, everything would be fine. It would start up with no problems till I let it rest for 5 or more hours. I am thinking sensors as well.
  6. My car is having issues with hard starting. I got: Code 12 Abnormal signal emitted from starter switch Code 21 Abnormal signal emitted from water temperature sensor Code 24 Air control valve But when I went to plug in my black testing wires, I saw this one loose. It plugs in in some where but I have yet to find it. I did find an old piece of black tape. There's a lot of taped up wired above there. Don't want to start juggling things around. What's worse is trying to do this from the passenger side as too much traffic is on the driver side towards the street. Thank You for any help you can give me.
  7. The stick says I have transmission fluid and its bright red, not burnt. Reverse works just fine. It seems to start having slippage after driving for 5 miles so I figured that's when the transmission fluid would warm up and not be so thick. I put in Lucas Transmission Fix this morning and ran the car for 10 miles and it seems to be doing better. Only time will tell.
  8. I have been having transmission problems where the transmission wouldn't engage from a complete stop. It wouldn't happen from starting on the road but it would act up down the road. I would have to put more pressure on the gas pedal to get it to engage. Once rolling down the road, it would be fine till I stopped again. When it first started, I put in half a quart of transmission fluid and it went away for 2 weeks. It did it again and I put some more fluid in and it went away for a week and a half. I plan to put cardboard underneath it to see if I have a leak but I am weary. The transmission stick shows fluid on it and I just put in a half a quart for the third time as I need to use the car tomorrow. How much fluid does this car need? Putting fluid in is helping. The stick now shows a lot of fluid on it but I don't want to overfill.
  9. It's very hard to get a picture of it with my phone as its such a tight area. I will look into the keyway and woodruff key. Don't have much experience with it but usually several youtube videos will point me in the right direction :-). I know about aligning the balancer with the slot into the keyway. I plan to check with AutoZone for new balancer right now. Due to my schedule, I will start work on it next week. Thanks guys for all your help!
  10. Sorry guys, I should have used the direct link: https://i.postimg.cc/ydVQGnkG/Harmonic-Balancer.jpg
  11. ok, I finally got a url for the picture from postimage. It looks very serious to me - more than just replacing the balancer. Brighton96 - thanks for letting me know about grimmspeed. I will probably go thru autozone in town as they have them in stock for around $50. I haven't broken any tools but I remember breaking a bolt 20 years ago and don't want to repeat it ever again. Osei - thanks for the torgue lbs (I have a torgue socket wrench) and the information on the flex plate. I will look into it (youtube). Yeah, I don't need any sensor problems. doublechaz - I live in Nevada but thanks! Sorry I got back so late but I work part-time to supplement my social security and i am on the bus system (and the bus system here can include ALOT of walking).
  12. I have a 1994 Subaru Legacy that I have owned for 10 and a half years. It was having a hard time starting back in December and I thought it was a fuel pump issue. Then one day, it didn't want to start at all. I check under the hood and the harmonic balancer was completely loose and the bolt was as well (so much that I unscrewed the bolt by hand). The old balancer looks like it ate into the timing belt cover. Would replacing the cover fix this? From the picture I took, there seems to be a hair-line crack on the right side and the metal part that the harmonic balancer sits on is pretty broken on the left side. It had a slight wobble but I never had any encounters with a bad one till now. When I smog the car last August, the mechanic was more interested in fixing my A/C (when I have never used). The person I bought this car in 2010 only expect it to last for a few years. But I took good care as I could of the car and it has never let me down. Except for replacing the MAF, PCV valve, and replacing rear brakes, it's been a good car. It's the longest I have ever had a car and, at 62, I have had quite a few. This car is a work horse and a very much a part of the family. I would enclose a picture of the damage but the picture insert wants an URL. I just have the picture on my computer. I just need to know if it's repairable and the cost. I have always worked on my own cars but I am feeling my age and I am on Social Security retirement. Thank You for any advice you can give me!
