Upgrading the Stereo!?

Looking at the pictures of the center console I have to wonder how difficult it will be to upgrade the stereos in those cars.

The stock stereo won't have MP3 capability so I'd have to upgrade, but I don't see the standard DIN slots.

My guess is that someone will have to come up with a new plastic piece for the console that will allow standard DIN stereos. Hopefully that happens before I go to buy one.

Lets hope it has decent power output, the Clarion unit in my WRX sucks and doesn't do justice to the Boston components I put in the front doors. I'm not really an audio person either but the stock speakers in USDM WRX's are awful. The way they are pitching the car the stock stereo should be half decent.

You would probably have to shop around for a new bezel (I think that's what the plastic cover things are called) or go for a Custom mount. Otherwise a little bit of DIY and a lot of patience will go a long way. I'd say under that thingy won't be too far from standard mounting brackets- at first glance it looks more cosmetic than anything else....Wouldn't mind having a go at it myself :)

Hopefully we'll see some spec sheets in due time...the lower-end Clarion units they're using just aren't good enough (IMO)

There is a piece sold by Subaru to fit DIN stereos. I'm sure we will be able to get it as well. I am trying to reason out whether it will be worth paying $1200 or so for the McIntosh (if it is even a stand alone option) or if it would be better to go aftermarket. I'm thinking about using the stock head unit for the stock look, price, and to have an in dash changer. - David Navone LOC to use the stock 6 disc ($25) - Navone line driver ($75) - stock rear speakers - IDQ10 in homemade fiberglass enclosure ($200) - Dynaudio 240GT 6.5" components ($460) - 3 channel amp ($360) - wire/misc. ($80) Mounting everything under the seats would be nice if you can get a halfway decent sub there. Anything to keep the weight down as much as possible. Later down the line I could put in a worthy head unit. EQ is not even necessary with a decent SQ amp and Dynaudio. An EQ will only hurt the sound. You know what? I think I talked myself out of even worrying about McIntosh.

The Australian spec GT Premium has the McIntosh similar to the pic above, (minor cosmetic differences only) comes with 13 speakers and if you look at the pic closely you will see a join in the bezel between the head unit the the A/C unit below. I guess this would allow the head unit to be removed/replaced with another din unit. Tim
