What would you do?

Recommended Posts

Ok so here is my situation. Dont ask why its like this but it is. Now I can get a legacy this summer when it comes out but its going to be AUTO. If i get the auto, in 2006 I can get a R33 GTR or something in that class (including a new sti if there is one.) If i get the stick i can chose from the STI or the Legacy but I cant get a car in 2006. Now what would you do. I know you people will think this is a dumb post but i need to know this. Its either one stick car know and nothing else or one auto Legacy and another car in 2 years.

By GTMY04
I'll try to keep this relatively brief, but I could probably fill a few pages. Firstly, this is how the 5AT operates (and I wasn't fully aware of all this until after I got the car). In 'D' it operates as a standard auto. The shifts are very smooth and in most cases imperceptable. At any time you can use one of the steering wheel buttons to change up or down (within rev/road speed limits). The unit 'senses' the conditions and will hold that gear until conditions change e.g. you're cruising in 5, flick the '-' button twice to shift back to 3 to overtake, the tranny will hold 3 until you ease off the gas or flick the '+' button to change up. If you do ease off the auto will change back up and revert to 'D' mode. The transmission has yaw sensors to recognise when you're hammering it around a long curve (read freeway on-ramps, etc) and will hold the gear. In most cases this works very well, although it can sometimes be fooled e.g. if you shift down and then ease off for a moment and then hit the gas again to find it's in 5th. In 'D' the green 'D' light on the dash is on until you manually shift, then the gear indicator comes on with an up and/or down arrow to let you know which gear you can grab. When you shift the lever to the right (I assume it may be to the left in US cars??) it goes into 'Sport' mode. Sport is basically 'D' with higher shift points, etc. Just an interesting side issue - Sport is deactivated when the cruise control is turned on In 'Sport' you have a SPORT light lit on the dash and the gear indicator operates, but without the up and down shift arrows - because the auto is still doing the work. From Sport you can now use either the buttons or the shift lever to step into Manual mode. The SPORT light goes off, and the up/down arrows appear at the appropriate time. What I like about the manual mode is the transmission will not think it's smarter than you and try and change. The exception is when you're lazy and slow down for lights, etc it will change down when the road speed is too low to maintain a gear. But it will hold a lower gear up to (and after) the rev limiter cuts in. I've driven both Audi A4 and our local Ford Falcon, and neither system comes close - because sooner or later the transmission will intervene and think it's time for a change. These in my opinion are gimmicky and just get annoying, so that you just end up using the car as a full auto. The Subaru is enjoyable to drive every day, and the local press have also given it rave reviews saying it's probably the best auto they've driven (inc BMW, etc).
Its all in the driver as per which is faster. Personally I'd go for the stick. My question is, why one of this and none of that, one of this and one of that deal. Just curious george got to me. Is it like one will be the wifes car or what?
Thanks for that info. Will the auto still keep up with a Z. And what faster a auto Legacy or a stick Lexus IS
Off the line a manual Z would be faster but as said down to driver after that. The good driving dynamics of the AWD leggy will not disappear with the auto. After all the top racing drivers F1 and WRC all use autobox these days. Lexus - couldn't say - but 4 wheel traction is better than 2.

I think the box all the race drivers use is a bit more complex than the ones we see in our cars. Just a word of advice, don't track drive the auto in manual mode, I hear the tranny heats up too much and goes into like a limp mode IIRC. I'm just not a fan of autos at all with having fun. Then again, I still have fun in out K2500 Chev truck, but thats a whole other kind of fun. :D

Ican get my car now or we can share this one, which i will mostly be driving, and i can get another car in 2006 so in a way i have 2 cars.

To simplify You buy a stick this year 04 - but then u will not be having a new car for some time. or You buy an auto (which u will mostly be driving)this year - but buy a new car in 2 years. Well it seems to me at some point u will be buying an Auto so u may as well buy a good one that u can enjoy.

Buy the auto, and be happy. The reviews of the autobox Legacy have been universally glowing, particularly the sport driving capabilities of the push-button gearbox, something very impressive for a car at that price point. I'm guessing that after two years with a GT, you won't be into shopping for a new car, anyhow. Kevin

Personally, if it were me, I'd say screw it and get what you want now and enjoy it. I would go nuts not having a stick for 2 years! If you guys stay in a cycle of getting new cars, should it matter who gets one first/2nd either? No. The other question, what does she want to drive really. Throw her the new Consumer Reports current model year issue and ask her what she wants. Maybe it isn't just a Leg? Better to make them as happy as possible.

I say get an auto Legacy now, and then be able to get an STi or similar in mid-2006 (next generation Impreza?). This would be the best of both worlds, though I really doubt you can compare the auto Legacy to a manual Z. Auto vs. auto, I'd take the SportShift over that in the Z. I know this is a bit off topic, but I really think you ought to beware about getting an R33. You will hate life whenever you need to order even the tiniest replacement part and have to wait weeks for it to arrive, and then it may or may not be the right part. I had that situation with my '95 Peugeot of which there were only 5 in Costa Rica. The times that the part I needed was specific to the rallye model, life sucked. You may like to read the following thread. The guy, JDM addict, has had two different GTRs and sold them because of this problem to wait for the USDM GTR. Just a word of caution is all while considering cars. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=483960

Take her to an AutoX, have her ride along with a friend or someone who you know who has one of the fastest, most awesome cars (if she doesn't get car sick), and then try teaching her stick! :D Sounds like you guys aren't hurting financially, so racing wouldn't be out of the question. Sanctioned racing with a good group of people is just lots of fun, and safe. I sent my sister who drive stick in her OBS along with my buddy who has an STi. When she came back, she had the biggest grin, it wasn't even funny. That got her hooked. You could try that. Driving stick can be so rewarding, unless you sit in lots of traffic. Then I'd just get a little hybrid.

If I bought a car like the Legacy with auto my wife would divorce me! She loves driving a stick as much as I do. She even enjoys autocrossing my '97 Legacy GT! :o However I'm a lucky guy, and I know it. For you I'd recommend the auto Legacy GT now, then later decide what you want. Who knows, maybe it'll be a Legacy STi. :D As already stated, the autobox Legacy is getting glowing reviews and you've still got the ability to do sequential manual shifts. Not quite the same as a clutch and a stick, but still damn fun!
