Potential transfer from other fanatic vehicle owner

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I'm a Jeep guy, but an automobile nut overall. I've said my entire life that I'll own a Subaru one day. I was very close to the STI, but figured it was too much car for me coming from lumbering built Jeeps. So I've been eyeing the WRX wagons. But with the new Legacy in the pipeline, well, that may just seal the deal! Here's my current obsession - Grand Cherokee, lifted, locked, geared, and a bunch of other goodies. That's gotta tell you something!

Yeah, it'll definitely take some getting used to. I'm used to playing at about 6mph, not 60! I'm a little concerned about the fording capabilities of the subaru: And how does it do at angles? Will the airbags deploy? :D

Looks like an STi would have been a great stablemate to your Jeep. Exreme offroad and extreme on road. The best you could get from Subaru for offroading would be a Forester XT e/ its 4.444 final drive and a Scorpion 50mm body lift/30mm suspension lift. Still won't go likeyour Jeep though. Looks fun.
Looks like an STi would have been a great stablemate to your Jeep. Exreme offroad and extreme on road.
So true. But the way I figure it, the end results will be near the same. All the Jeep guys are asking how I'll cope without wheelin' on the weekends. Well, I'll be learning auto-x! I figure the price of brake pads and high octane and other road-sport expenses will equal the costs of broken tie-rod ends, bent axle shafts, worn out shocks, etc. The mods should about equal out - powerplant vs. suspension. Both need drivetrain mods, and both have higher-than-usual tire wear and tire costs. And it'll be a pleasure not worrying (as often) about getting stuck or rolling over. Now to just train myself to like body kits, big flashy rims, fart pipes, etc.

nah, body kits add weight as do most rims if you go bigger than stock. No exhaust tip over 3" is *necessary*, and you will find most for Subaru to be 3.5-4" or even smaller, dual tip. if you want to dip your toe into street cars for AutoX, look for an early model Miata which you can find for about $3-4000 and has excellent handling traits even with crappy tires. It won't handle high lateral G's, but you get to learn how to drive. Then you can always move up from there. If you just buy yourself an STi and try learning with it, you're going to look silly for having such a high hp car and not being able to drive it. Learn the basics first with manageable power, and then kick it up a few notches.
