Yeah, for summer driving, RWD is a little bit more fun, or at least a more RWD bias. Have yet to have the diff set in lock on snow in my buddys STi. Alright now I know what we have to try out next time I'm over. :D
I heard ATTESA is a wee bit heavy too. The RWD burnouts and then to a supposed AWD is about the coolest thing of the system. Got a vid of Nagata from Top Secret doing one in a tunnel. ;)
It is no more heavy than the addition of AWD onto any other car. I'm guessing that a RWD Legacy could weigh in about 150-200lbs lighter. SUBE, that's a difference like driving with or without your girlfriend. ;)

No, team23, Subaru Symmetrical AWD is extremely different from ATTESA. It is split 50:50 f/r in the manual tranny cars and 45/55 f/r in the automatics. Then, depending on which wheels are slipping, it sends power to the other(s). The only difference on the Spec C is like the STi with DCCD and a front LSD.

Spec C gets virtually same setup as USDM STi. The Legacy setup will likely be basically the same as the FXT though with different ratios including the FDR. ALL Subaru AWD systems are very similar. Remember, Subaru's are like Legos. :)
