SUBE555
A serious question folks, yes, I know I've been on here a bunch, but it seems to time out periodically for 30min or so and then return. Has anyone else seen this periodically?
Tide
Timing out? As in the site is not available or?
GBY
95% of the time the host server is awesome and the pages on this board load instantly here at work with our T1 (small company maybe only 2 or 3 users online at any one time). Occasionally there seems to be some congestion, which slows it to about 56K speed.
Tide
Basically -- This server is behind a firewall ran by my roommates company. My roommates a long time friend and I get free co-located hosting in a secure rack. But... If when a large request comes in for his servers, bandwidth to mine (and his personal server) gets cut by the firewall to a minimum amount. Most of his transactions are after midnight (syncing) so during the day you will rarely notice it. Its a small inconvienence for free hosting. I do have the option to buy bandwidth from them at cost, and thats about $200 for 1 mbit / month. This site will use about 1-2 GB a month, its only worth the upgrade if we're pushing 100 GB of transfer. 1mbit would get me about 300 GB a month. I figure I have 6 months to work out a way to pay for this site if hosting is needed. Banner ads, affiliate programs (tire rack, brakeworld, etc), and Paypal dontate (memberships?) have come to mind. But for now its wait and see how the bandwidth goes.
GBY
Thanks for the info. I'm primarily an accounting type that got landed with the IT function here at work by being the next most capable after the previous person left so it's great to get a bit of an insight. SUBE555
Thats basically what I figured, the connection is tied up for a little while, then its back like 15-30min later at most. Not a big deal. Since its free, no problems there.
Tide
How's the speed been now? I killed off some rouge scripts that were no longer needed and did a long needed restart of Apache. The server has been up for over 320 days now. :)
SUBE555
Hard to tell, I'm on the school's T3. :P I know I never have interruptions here while at home I get intermittent timing out (at least through last night) though the periods of time they've been lasting has been reducing. That's on OS X.2.8 w/ Safari 1.(whatever the latest version)
dimil
I have cable, this site comes up very fast, maybe a bit faster initial response than week ago. Thanks for making this place available for all of us :).
