Center bin options: storage, navigation, gauges

What would you want for your bin area above the stereo?

  1. 1. What would you want for your bin area above the stereo?

    • storage compartment
    • OnStar & trip computer & volt/acceleration/mpg gauges
    • 3 gauges like the STi Genome
    • aftermarket dvd/navigation screen

I voted for the STi guages.. but either the screen or the gauges is fine with me. We might need to get a group buy on those gauges when we get our cars. I highly doubt they will offer them as an option here, even though I would spring for them in second.

What I see that looks worthless about the gauges on the "stock" screen is what they are. http://www.subaru-global.com/lineup/legacy/sedan/interior/display.html It is a voltmeter, "instantaneous fuel consumption" and "accelerator opening angle". Genome products normally seem to be more difficult to find in the US, but I'm sure that some company can come up with a gauge mount just as I'm sure we can end up getting a way to mount an aftermarket screen for DVD navigation/stereo. For the gauges, Defi makes gauges like the STi Impreza and has a three gauge set to fit in a DIN slot. http://www.aj-racing.com/specials.html mattjk has been making a screen for the WRX as can be seen here. I'm sure that he or somebody else will be able to do the same with the Legacy for a factory look aftermarket setup.

I see what your saying.. I will say this though, the last thing I want to do with my new legacy will be to take a knife to it in any way. I definitely will want something that will be "plug and play" like the genome guages. Either way I will not be satisfied with a little "cubby" on my dash board. That would be a tremendous waste.

The cubby would be good for the garage door opener. However, in the JDM accessory book, they have an overhead console available with two sunglass holders and a third storage that looks like the garage opener bin. It wouldn't work with a sunroof though.
c'mon.. capt. suspension won't want to see a turbo gauge or something in there? I find that hard to believe.
Nope. This Legacy will be, for me, unmodded. Don't need a boost gauge, because if the turbo is hinky, you'll know it from the car's performance. Don't need no storage cubbies, either. My GT wagon ain't no minivan. Kevin

team23, there will be a trip computer. It's just under the storage bin on an digital clock type LCD. So what use do you have for the volts, mpg, and accelerator? Do we really need a gauge to tell us how far to the floor we have the heavy pedal? I can understand why a reviewer would call it gimmick. Yeah, I'm giving you a hard time, but everybody gets to try to put up a reasonable justification. We've gotta find something to talk about for the next four months. Any of you Far East people know what three gauges the cars have there?

Wish you could get HomeLink for up to 3 garage doors integrated. That would be slick. Never futz with finding the right clicker. But that's an overhead thing. BTW, I think thats a bad pic of the gauges or they're just way more generic than the others I've seen.

Unfortunately that isn't a bad picture, the pic from PPower looks as it had been scanned from the Japanese Legacy Accessories brochure. They are the STi genome gauges. There is also an option for a turbo pressure gauge which can positioned to the side of the windscreen on the 'post' - can think of the proper techie term. I bought an off the shelf GT specB, without any gauges, the only option was to go for the DVD Nav system which looks much identical to the link from the global homepage. The gauges here in Japan are just the volts, km/l fuel consumption and acceleration (as mentioned in the Top Gear review). On the trip computer, you have current and average fuel consumption, as well as external temperature.

I'm sorry, but those gauges look like they were just hocked from an "84" Rabbit (the old VDO three pack). I wan't the full LCD screen gauges that go with the new more upscale direction from Subaru...DON'T CHEAP OUT ON US SUBARU!!! I WILL PAY TO PLAY!!!

Unfortunately the chances of use getting those gauges are slim to none.. and if you think you would still pick them up aftermarket make sure you have your wallets ready! I was looking at some STi gauges for the WRX made by defi.. they were SUPER expensive!

Yeah, the Defi's are super expensive, I think they're in the $500-1000 range if memory serves. Better yet would be to have boost, EGT, Oil Temp, and Oil Pressure built into the dash! :D But it would also make the models a bit more expensive as well as complicate things for NA models. Would probably look a bit cluttered too. There was an interesting pic with that over on NASIOC a few months back.
