2002 silver WRX wagon for me...

Recommended Posts

I'm running the Subaru 4-pot brakes with Goodridge lines, SPT suspension package with Gp. N strut tops, STi lateral/trailing/swaybar links at the back and a Cusco Type II lower brace in the front. I've also done Gp. N engine/trans mounts, STi short shifter with Kartboy bushings, and that stylin' Momo knob that matches the steering wheel. My wheels for the summer are Prodrive P1s with 215-45-17 Dunlop 9000s (yes, they're going on the Legacy), but winters are on the car at present. I don't really believe in power mods, as I think that with proper suspension tuning, a car can be incredibly fast simply because it doesn't have to slow down very much, or very often. It's a fantastic car. No maintenance headaches, squeaks or odd rattles, and it's unusually fast for a stock car, I am told. :D Kevin

I know that you are relatively a suspension guru. What have you found in your experience that you didn't like? Have you learned anything from your various suspensions that you think will help you pick out your "ideal" legacy suspension? Or do you plan on keeping suspension stock as well?

I agree Tide. The base Cobb reflash for $395 gets you 255-260hp and roughly the same number for torque, I'm also told its a good deal smoother than stock as well as a hair bit extra fuel economy until you dig into the gas pedal.

What I have learned is that a lad can indeed have too much time, and too many air tools. :D Seriously, I have learned that Subaru knows what it's doing. My '98 GT wagon began the experiments, with an Eibach/AGX combo, then Tein HA coilovers, and finally DMS Golds, which were transferred over to the WRX wagon. Though all of those suspensions had their benefits (except the Eibach/AGX combo, which just sucked), when I fiddled around with spring rates, etc, on the DMS and all that stuff, then decided to try the SPT suspension kit, the revelation hit me: There's nothing like stock, as in issued by Fuji Heavy. There's no retrofitting, no zip-tying, no nothing. Just excellence in fit and handling. I've learned that balance is crucial, and rare is the aftermarket setup that offers the balance of a well thought-out stock setup. For that reason, the Legacy will be unmodded in every way, and certainly not power-wise. The WRX is already way too fast for public roads in the hands of a good driver, and the Legacy GT will be more powerful. The synergistic effects of all the STi bits that I now have on the car are very impressive, but from what I hear about the Legacy's handling, I shouldn't have to touch a thing. Kevin Kevin

wow, so do you think you will even pass on getting a bigger rear swaybar should it turn out to be a handling situation like the WRX sedan vs. wagon? I know that the SPT kit was always highly regarded for its ride and performance over various surfaces. It would be interesting to see if there becomes an SPT kit which could be like the JDM GT (not the rock hard Bilstein). Sounds like really you're going to be the most sensible because a car for the track that would need a real all out suspension should be a secondary car.

Nice to hear someone that likes the SPT kit, I've only heard that from a smaller percentage, most whine 'Its too hard' or something to that effect. I wonder what they really expected. If I had picked up a bugeye, that is the kit I would have installed. I like the factory gear when possible, and generally they make some of the best gear, particularly in the area of handling. Too bad they didn't make it for the MY04s with the suspension revisions, but I guess they probably figured we have the STi, why upgrade the std REX. I am rather interested to see how the new GT handles. I'll probably end up with STi springs, Stoptech Brake Lines, ceramic brake pad upgrade when those get worn down, and Cobb's AccessECU w/ AccessPort as well as possibly a short-shift kit. I'm sure there would be more involved ultimately, but that is a real good start at accentuating the positive aspects while minmizing the negatives. That's just me though.

What I suspect with the new Legacy, is that the stock 17s, combined with the quick steering, will make for an excellent handler. Regarding the SPT package, when I test-flogged an '04, the suspension settings felt remarkably close to the SPT stuff. Those '04s are very sharp-handling cars. I would guess that the reason Subaru didn't do any sort of SPT thing for the '04s is that the car didn't need it. It's a very firm, nice-handling ride. I'm not ruling out something as benign as a swaybar or stainless lines for the Legacy, but those are so mild, I almost don't consider them mods. Kevin
