African GT review...

Recommended Posts

Oops .. other msg in the wrong sub-forum! Just found an interesting article comparing the GT 2.0 with the more expensive 530i and Saab 9-5 2.3 Turbo. No guessing who wins.... I'm a bit surprised about the big difference between the claimed and 'actual' 0-100 accel times they achieved .... Check it out... <<The biggest surprise here is the Legacy's cabin. Quantum leap is an understatement of note for the progress that Subaru has made inside its big sedan. Gone are those horrid plasticy and ill fitted pieces that seemed to fight each other for their space in the cabin - all that junk is replaced by a cockpit of great feeling, serenity and quality comprising parts, finishes and a look that work so well together.>> Also note that the tested 0-62 mph time for the AUTOBOX was 6.8 seconds, and that was with the 2.0-liter motor. I don't think the predictions of 5.5 for the manual 2.5-liter turbo are going to be optimistic at all. :D Kevin

That review is part of why I'm happy just to get a manual GT wagon, to hell with any "high-performance" versions that may or may not be coming. The performance of my WRX is, even when driven at 6/10ths, too much for the free world, if you want to stay out of jail. The Legacy GT will have even more performance capability, which is plenty for me, thank you. :D Kevin
Do I need a Legacy STi? Probably not. Would I be happy with a Legacy GT? Based on this review, more than likely. Would I rather have a Legacy STi? Definately.
I respect anyone's choices. I asked myself "Why," and just didn't come up with any sort of a reasonable answer. I'm not into hard-riding cars anymore. I just want smooth, fast and comfortable, with a lovely interior and all-wheel-drive. I'm sure if a Legacy STi comes, it will be lovely. I'll be sure to wave whenever I see one, as I do with all Scoobies. Kevin

I'm uncertain as to whether the GT is going to be too smooth for me after owning a WRX STi but I am definately not looking for something that "hard edged" either. Ultimately it comes down to how much driving enjoyment is lost from the car by softening the suspension and I don't want a Legacy that isn't much fun to drive.

On the review, what is the difference on the 0-100km/h (c) and (g)? the (c) is 6.8seconds and (g) is 8.3 seconds. With the Spec B MT being about 5.3 seconds, I'm guessing that their "base" GT is 5.5 in the manual. The time of 6.8 seconds could be very indicative of what we will see as well as that fits right in line with G35 AT acceleration. It's nice to see the 80-120km/h and 120-160km/h times. I'm looking to the thorough reviews of the US model. That's for sure.
6.8 seconds is the GT autobox, while 8.3 is the H6 autobox. The Spec B is suspension upgrades, not power, so we should expect an MT sedan to have similar acceleration numbers to the Spec B. Kevin
The 4.444 final drive vs. 4.110 is supposed to make a difference. True about the 2.0T vs. 3.0H6
You said lovely twice in that post.. you seem to really be in touch with your feelings :lol:
Kind of reminds of my "Owners Say" review of the STi in Autoweek. In there paraphrasing of my submitted review, I appear to "adore" the Type R. Nope, I've never used that word in my life. From Autoweek "There are many things I love about the STi, like the awesome motor, rally-car handling and a ride that is more comfortable than I expected. The interior is nice without being overdone, build quality is excellent and materials don’t feel overly cheap. Many people appreciate its aggressive looks and wing (myself included). I considered the Infiniti G35 coupe but it was too pricey and slow. I used to buy mainly Hondas/Acuras and adored the Integra Type-R. But this is my new favorite car. -Troy Dube, Eau Claire, Wis."

I would tend to share the view of Troy a bit more than Kevin. Right now I just want to enjoy life to the max and that includes high-speed AutoXs, yada, yada, but the nice drive to and from the office is also welcome. I would be perfectly comfortable in a WRX STi or a Legacy GT or Legacy STi. The LegGT is a little different in tune than how I first imagined, though this special edition if it makes it here is really what I would love to have in my garage, best compromise without much compromise at all, and in fact it should be able to own the road without an issue and do it in comfort and stealth. Gotta love it!
It's kind of dissappointing becuase im getting an auto and those # didnt impress me.
A 6.8-second 0-62 mph time from an autobox doesn't impress? Hmmm. It sure impressed me. And I bet the Times doesn't brake-torque their autoboxes for launch, either. That was almost certainly a stop/brake/gas launch. That's pretty quick for an auto, sir. Now, the G35X tested by AutoWeek was quicker, to be sure, so if you're shopping autobox, you certainly have another option to consider. Kevin
It's kind of dissappointing becuase im getting an auto and those # didnt impress me.
Losing 1-1.5 second with an auto is perfectly normal. In turbo cars, the difference tends to be greater than NA cars I've noticed over the years. I'm sure this has to do with the ability to brake-torque and the lag of spool up on top of the extra power loss. I remember that the difference in the Supra and RX-7 was huge and I knowfirsthand that the difference in the 300ZX tt was like two different cars.

I wonder why they couldn't get near top performance, i.e. why the 8.3 second 0-100kph instead of a 6.8 or even close. If its an Auto it shouldn't be that hard, should it? Unless there's something about the altitude or fuel in South Africa. Maybe, the reviewers are lousy? The measuring equipement crap? Driving up an mild incline? Not using the self-shifter? Or maybe all those claimed 0-100 times involve unhealthy brake torque launching... Anyone got any suggestions? :? Anyone know of any other 0-100 times 'gauteng'? Cheers, Mike.
