Maxima vs. Legacy GT

Recommended Posts

From a roll, its been said drag racing (the legal variety at least) is all about the launch. I know the Maxima is powerful, but with proper launch technique, you should be able to stay with a Maxima through the 1/4. Thats why I say, its all driver. Do it from a roll, even slow ones, its still not a real good test.

I think the 0 to 60 time for a GT will be at least .5 seconds ahead of the new maxima in the real world (the new maxima has severe torque steer and a drive-by-wire throttle system that makes the regulation of RPM's with a manual difficult for launching). With even the basic tuning done to the new GT, we will have very few challenges from cars even $10,000 more in price...SWEET!!! :P

The "255hp" Maximas are really 240hp (over-rated) but 265 lb-ft of torque (not 246, so under-rated there). They'll do 14.6-14.7 @ 93 at the track with automatics and 2.1-2.2 60' times. A few guys have even gotten 14.4's, but high-14's are the norm. The 6spds will do low-14's usually at 95-97 mph, but the shifter sucks and it's really easy to miss 3rd, so generally they run mid-14's. My old 99 Maxima (95-99 bodystyle) will do high-14/low-15s @ 92-93 mph with a 5spd. And yes, it's just as quick from a roll as a WRX (stock vs stock) as the trap speeds are about equal. There's a sticky at Maxima.org with the general consensus on stock times. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=289125 I'm going to post up some highly technical and "scientifically proven to be very accurate" bench racing hopefully later tonight on what I think the new Legacys will realistically be able to run. :) Steve

The Legacy will definatly take it off the line, but as for the rest of the race it would be quite interesting. I think the Maxima might take it in a 1/4 mile or any other straight line. In a rally style race however I don't think the Maxima will stand a chance.

Anybody see the previews of the '05 Altima SE-R? I don't think official specs are out yet, but word is it'll be tuned for more power than the Maxima, at a lighter weight. Suspension and tires should be good too. Sounds like a pretty good package for the money if you can live with FWD. In a straight line I'm guessing it will eat up a stock leg GT.

Yeah I saw that.... http://www.nissannews.com/nissan/2005vehicles/altima_se-r/index.shtml It's one of the "other" cars that I'll be considering, and it'll definitely be a force to be reckoned with - especially in a straight line. But I'm still leaning towards the Legacy pretty heavily for a lot of reasons.

There's good and bad things about every drivetrain configuration. Torque steer is one of the sore points of high-powered FWD cars, but other configurations (RWD and AWD) have their weaknesses also. Just something to be aware of when trying to figure out which car will work best for you. The Maxima guys don't complain about torque steer too much. If you're gonna get on it, just be sure to have a firm grasp of the wheel. ;) There's ways of mitigating torque steer, but it doesn't seem to be a very high priority on cars these days (safety standards and emissions are). The new TL and Maxima are said to torque steer "heavily" but most people that buy them didn't seem to care enough that it would stop them from buying it.

I think the MAJORITY of Maxima owners wouldn't eve think about revving that engine past 4k rpm. Heck, there's someone I talk to on a semi-regular basis from Nabisco, her dad has an STi, first thing he did was throw all-season CEC's on the STi because it rode too harsh, and doesn't believe in taking it past 4k rpm. So sad!

buahahaha Oh boy...what a waste of an STi. That is sad. Not really - lemme know who it is because I'll buy it off of them in a few years when they're bored with it because I'll know it was babied. And there's so much low and mid-range torque in Maximas that there's no need to rev them more than 4k. They're almost like domestics. . The Honda guys around here are a different story - always got their foot flat to the floor. I think they're just trying to get some torque.
