The UTEC is a new concept in 2.5L/STi engine management delivering the power and control of a stand-alone engine management system with the convenience and tuning ease of a piggyback system. UTEC enables complete programmable control over ignition timing, fuel, and boost, while allowing the factory ECU to maintain control over tedious and mundane functions that make the car drivable on a daily basis. Functions like cold start, hot start, intake temperature compensation, AC compensation and closed loop fuel control signals are all managed by the factory ECU reducing your tuning time significantly while enhancing daily drivability. Plug-&-Play
No cutting, splicing or additional sensors required 20 minute, do-it-yourself installation
End-user programmable: via PC w/ a serial port,PDA with HyperTerminal, and Game Boy and Smart Cable (coming soon) Fine tune the maps for your exact setup

Knock control: Automatically retards timing when the knock is detected safeguarding against engine damage Adjustable knock threshold, timing correction, and duration

The UTEC system has been used on several of the fastest Subaru's in the country so I opted to use it on my vehicle as well, knowing that it was a system that would support my current and future modifications.
The interface is via a vt100 terminal and easy to use for quick changes... doing large editing of maps was/is cumbersome though. The whole point of writing UTEC Tuner 2005 editing software was to fill a niche for a quality windows editor, to help build utec maps...
Overall the STi UTEC in a LGT seems to fit right in. The stock STi base maps are essentially worthless though, so until recently I was running on stock timing map /w 16 psi of boost and a little fuel up top to prevent knock. Even with stock timing I was able to reach 12.9 @ 106 in the 1/4. So yes, the utec is a viable tuning solution for the LGT community. Will it take some time to adapt it to your vehicle? Yes. If you're comfortible tuning, go for it. A comperable tuning solution is Cobb's StreetTuner package... pricing is comperable on both.
