EXEDY RACING STAGE 1 FULL ORGANIC SINGLE PLATE clutches are engineered, designed and built from the ground up as race clutches, not rebuilt from stock clutches that have been modified. All Exedy racing pressure plates are made from ductile iron which is about 30-40% stronger than conventional cast iron pressure plates other racing clutch manufactures use. Exedy Racing Stage 1 clutch kit with organic friction materials use only premium friction materials that are resistant to slippage and burst.

Car: 2005 Subaru Legacy GT 5MT

Exedy Stage 1 Clutch Kit - $430 gripforce usa
F1 Lightened Flywheel - $180 gripforce usa
Clutch and Flywheel were installed by veteran Subaru mechanic at Dealership. $560
(SUBARU DOLLARS THIS YEAR: $400 = total install cost $160)
Total Parts and Labor = $1170 ($770 if you have $400 subie bucks!)
Break-In Experiences:
0-10 Miles = Clutch was slightly smelly and extreemly grabby no matter how much baby it. Lightened flywheel combo requires at least a LITTLE throttle to move the car off the line. Accidental bucking bronco once when distracted.
10-100 Miles = Clutch pedal extra stiffness and weight feels totally stock now. A huge improvement is that the pedal stiffness and weight now feel very similar to an Audi TT I recently drove. I baby the clutch as much as possible.
100-500 miles = Clutch engagement is quick but if treated gently feels completely stock. During this time I took two girlfriends out to dinner and one remarked that she did not realize it was a stick shift because it felt smooth like an automatic. (Partially my driving, partically a proper streetable clutch upgrade - those of you who have driven 3 puck unsprung clutches like me know what I am talking about.) I took it real easy during this time. I had to rev to 1500RPMs for smooth quiet take-off. The clutch is featherable yet necksnapping if let out fast. Totally comfortable to drive in bumper to bumper Los Angeles traffic even on an incline.
500-1000 miles = Feels completely normal now. Hard to imagine a softer (read mushier) clutch pedal or less positive engagement. It is great to have a clutch that feels like it wants to yank you out of your pants if you let it. A complaint is with the F1 13lb flywheel this combo sounds like a few pieces of gravel are in the tranny when off throttle in 3rd or 4th from 4000rpm to 2500rpm but this is to be expected. A lightened flywheel does not damped the noise anywhere near as much as a big heavy dual mass one.
1000-2000 miles = This clutch has far more grip than the stock one but feels very similar to stock. My girlfriend got in and was able to drive it fairly smoothly (she needs a bit of work match shifting gears) and starteled the piss out of me with a drag launch just to get my goat (she got it!). The clutch holds up to a 3500rpm drag launch without complaint (not going to do that many times) or smell and holds WOT in every gear with a very VERY solid feeling.
I am very happy with this setup. I am slightly annoyed by the noise of the flywheel (more on this in a review of the flywheel). The clutch is slightly jerky on downshifting if shifting on negative rpm side. I hope that this setup has the longevity of the factory parts.
For a little more than a stock replacement and a lot less than an ACT kit you can have this serious improvement to your powertrain.
All in all I’m very happy with this setup. It has held up to my expectations so far. I will say that at first; I was a little concerned with the noise and the way it grabbed off the line and on down shifts. It was real jerky and you had to rev match perfectly; which was hard at first with the flywheel, it makes the gas pedal real touchy and the RPMs just kind of hang up high for a split second longer on shifts. I found that if you just don’t completely let off the gas when shifting up or down it will engage a lot smoother.
The Lightweight Flywheel makes for a little gear noise on vibration at times. Since it doesn’t have a Dual Mass design it won’t dampen as much noise or vibration, so you should expect to hear more chatter on take off and some rolling gear noise when you let off the gas and coast or use the transmission to slow down. I usually only hear it in 3rd and 4th gear above 2K RPMs. It all sounds and feels pretty rough in the beginning, but it hasn’t slipped or spun on my yet so I guess we’ll see how long it lasts.
** Pictures won't upload so I will post them with copy of review in a Transmission thread.
