SuBK
So i got kinda bored with the cubby cuz i never used it and have always been used to have a nav system in my cars so I got some ideas from around these forums and made my own install to make it look sort of factory like. I used the Sony NV-U83T GPS system with 4.8" screen and it turned out surprisingly nice. I completely removed the cubby and placed it in the opening from behind the dash and surrounded it with plastic material that closely resembles the dash color and material. I built a custom support behind it which pushes it up against the opening so it fits in there nice and snug. Nice thing about it is I hardwired it to the car so it turns on and off with my ignition and the display lighting auto-changes for day and night, also has bluetooth with built in speaker and voice navigation that speaks street names and all... here some pics, sorry for the crappy quality it was taken on my iphone. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e71/bennycent50/nav.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e71/bennycent50/nav3.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e71/bennycent50/nav4.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e71/bennycent50/nav2.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e71/bennycent50/nav6.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e71/bennycent50/nav5.jpg
Jerboa113
looks good. I would love to see pics of the assembly from behind. Where did you find the plastic material? You know you could probably dremel the hinge assembly off the oem face plate, put some magnets on it and on the plastic pieces on the sides of this.. and then clip it over it to prevent prying eyes from seeing it. Yea ill pull it out and show the assembly from behind, you're gonna be like WTF is that! lol.. i rigged up this huge steel springloaded rod that i coiled up to give it good pressure. And as for the plastic, I just found the pieces lying around my garage. I have been trying to think of a good way to have it covered and that magnet idea is a great idea. Ill have to try to work with something like that.
Jerboa113
just be careful.. I dont know how LCDs react to magnets but i know CRTs dont like them! I thought about doing this and the magnet idea years ago, I just never acted on it.. no.. I had to do things the hard way.. and when it didnt work out.. I came out $3k in the hole with nothing to show for it. ean611
SuBK Sweet install. I have that same GPS, and if they ever come out with a radio replacement kit to move my aftermarket deck into the radio spot, I'll probably copy what you did. MZG
I know this is an old thread but can anyone recommend a newer "portable" GPS that I could custom fit into the cubby? In my old age I have finally decided that GPS would be nice I like the way this sony looks and I can get one for dirt cheap so it is definitely an option. cholmes1
This thread seems long dead, but a good way to hide your navigation is fabricating a cover made of speaker screen. You know that black cloth. I know RS25.com had a lot of setups that used this and it looked fine and kept outsiders from getting too curious. However, I think your install is clean enough to look factory and most grabbers don't seem to mess with 'factory' units. At least here in Chicago.
