so here is the story...

f1vlad and i were heading towards manchester NH from portsmouth on 101 E. Between exit 6 and 5, we were going down around 80mph. Granted, its a 55 but anyone that has driven on 101 knows its really 80. I was on my way to Teds to swap to my winter tires (irony) and Vlad was on his way to Nashua. BTW- Ted did an awesome job swapping to winters, balancing mounting and what not. Good guy and very friendly and accommodating since I was 1 hr late....

So I am driving and suddenly the red jeep in front of my slams on his brakes and swerves. I suddenly see a large bail of hay that must have fallen off a truck and I swerve as well. At this point, I dont really remember what happened. I remember fish tailing and the body roll was incredible. Thankfully I was wearing my seatbelt. I swung back and forth a couple of times and Vlad said that at one point I was actually facing his car behind me, doing a complete 180 which I dont remember. I remember seeing the woods in front of me and cutting the wheel as hard as I could. I ended up in the ravine between east and west 101. I called the police, who came about 20 minutes later and were no help at all. A few cars stopped, including Vlad and another mystery black 2006 RS. I was fine, drove out of the ravine, and then I heard a thumping noise. At first I thought it was my axle cuz my steering was all over the place, but luckily it was just my front driver side tire. It had actually folded and come off the driver side wheel. I pulled over, changed my tire, and drove away.

When the cop came by, he didn't bother to get out of his car. The whole time he was on his cell phone and just asked if I was ok. He drove away, didnt help me at all. http://images.nasioc.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gif State trooper....

All in all, I am fine. Pretty sore but thats about it. Car is fine, wheel is nicked up but not bent as far as I can tell. Phew.

No.. I did not pee my pants. I didnt even pee when I got to Ted's.

I am glad you're alright!

From the description it appears you were following the Jeep too closely. Clearly you did a panic manuver and either oversteered or the lethal OB suspension carried you away - you might have been better hitting the hay.

And, of course, I wonder if you drove an LGT if you would be simply able to go around it. I bet you would - I had one emergency manuver in my LGT (on Bilsteins and Pinks) at 80+ mph and it just nicely went around an obstacle without any drama.

Actually its a 65MPH zone. I live off exit 6.

Glad your ok and all is well.

glad your ok

lol what did you want the cop to do?

Yes, a motivated State Trooper can always nail you for something, if he wants to.

Is it my imagination or is the road surface on 101 particularly slick in rain?

I have lived off RT101 for the last 10 years. I find it perfectly fine. However in winter its tricky being East<>West highway as the conditions typically change from snow in Manchester>wet snow Raymond>slush in Exeter>Ice momentarily Hampton and finally wet road all within a 1 hr drive(less on dry of course). People occasional speed excessively/aggressive on it making it "dangerous" but that is not the road itself but drivers.

the man didn't roll the car.....he did good and kept the shiny side down. Had he been in an LGT and done a 180 into the culvert, he'd have been waiting there all night for a tow truck to pull him out. He'd probably have done more damage too.

I've rotated ends in a modded CRX on Pirelli summer tires on a wet road doing a similar maneuver. I guess it didn't handle well enough by your logic.

dude. shit happens. not everything can be avoided. guess had I been a better driver back when I was 17 I could have avoided the oncoming car swerving across the center line at a combined speed of 110mph, eh?

Sure, shit happens. In some situations not even best car and best-skilled driver could help. It's pure speculation to say that if X then Y. You might be right about LGT doing worse, I might by right about LGT doing it better. We can't say... just pure speculation.

Anyway, I did similar (*possibly*) emergency manuever at similar speed in my LGT and did not loose control for a second. I drove an OB and the thing was wallowing at 60 mph during simple lane change on a curve at a highway. Hence my OB bashing when I read about accidents or accedents-to-happen in Outbacks.

It's not necessary to rollover a car. The simple fact of excessive body roll in OB and poor handling could be enough for the OP to loose control of the car.

Ok, I'll stop OB bashing...

Peace and love!!!

Wow, how much body roll can you get out of a car that low? What's the suspension setup on that rig?

PS> those are lug nuts in the bag, right?

lol..vlad photochopped it so its not really that low. yes.. rota lugs in the bag

I got hit head on by a drunk driver at 12:30 on a Monday afternoon - in a downtown area. He faked right first, though....

He couldn't even stand up when they took him out of the car. Ya never know!
