Last friday I brought back home '07 Legacy GT from Van Bortel Subaru just outside of Rochester, NY. Everything went super smooth at the dealership and at the border (which surprised me). I would highly recommed dealing with Van Bortel subaru for anyone from GTA. They are very helpful in every step. They do all the paperwork for you, fax it to the border etc... all you do is show up sign the paper, pay and off you go
At the USA border an officer asked me if I was inmporting when I pulled into the office and took me inside with all the papers, stamped and told me to drive up to Canada customs. There I spend 15 minutes with officer while he filled up the importation form, paid GST and RIV and a/c tax and off I went home
The car is now in the garage and tomorrow I will be calling RIV to email me the form 2 so I can go get my inspection done and get the car registered.
The car I got is Diamond Grey metallin, 5spd, floor mats, dimmable mirror, armrest ext...
All in all the car cost me a whopping $34500 CDN (after all taxes and fees).

Does that price include GST? If so, that is a heck of a deal.
What did you do with respect to plates and insurance to drive it home?

DA SUUB... that includes all GST and PST etc.
The dealer provides you with temp NY plates that are good to get oyu home. You have to get insurance in Canada in order for the dealer to let you drive it off the lot (believe it or not but I pay only $15/m more for this car then I do for my 2000 VW jetta TDI, explain that to me someone please). Now the car is parked and I am waiting for the form from goverment to get the inspections done. AFter that I am off to licence office and into the car. Some ppl tell me I can drive with the temp plates right now some ppl say I cant... since I dont want to find out the hard way I cant I just let the car be for now.

Nice, so roughly a $10K savings with buying it in the States vs: up here...
Wow!

And the US$ has been taking another severe beating against major world currencies in the last week or so. Going to hard on some Canadian businesses though. SOC for instance.

What's the deal on the warranty? As valid in Canada as in the U.S?

Wow! Congrats on the savings and new car.
I might just do that in a year if SOC don't wake up. I will not pay the stupid Canadian high prices they are putting out right now.

Warranty is valid in Canada. But come on... for the savings... imaging how many things would have to go wrong on your car for this not to be worth it.
If anyone is thinking about doing this from the Van Bortel... contact Karl and tell him Tom sent you. He will set you up with everything you need and make the whole thing very very pleasent and easy.

I am willing to buy the car without warranty if they knock the price down by $10K
That's like 7K Below Canadian Invoice for the price he paid.
Good Job

Very true, especially if you're going to modify it, the warranty is debatable at best.

Glad to hear everything went smoothly! I saved $10K by getting my WRX in the US as well. GREAT DEAL!!!
As for the plates, in Quebec, you can drive around with the temp plates until they expire (I beleive its 15 days). I asked the SAAQ, and they said it was perfectly legal. Not sure how it is in the rest of Canada, but you can call your license bureau and ask.

I bet that this importing loophole is going to be somehow closed soon, probably by SOC requesting to their HQ that they don't have to honour warranty on US cars (like Honda and many other manufacturers do). It is just too easy to import, and when word of this option spreads further, they will have to do something about it! My only regret is that I bought from Van Bortel last Dec when a US dollar cost $1.18!!
