I had lost touch with the open source Subaru tuning efforts for a few months since I'm happy with the stage 1 map I'm running on my WRX. Since we're picking up my wife's new MY06 OXT today I have started reacquanting and I'm very impressed with how far they've come.
Out of the box, I was able to open a base MY05 LGT 5EAT rom from:
Open Source ECU ROMS
with the free map editing software from:
Enginuity :: Index
The Enginuity app recognized just a ton of maps from the ECU. I would mostly just care about timing/fueling/boost (and to a lesser extent the closed loop => open loop transition settings), but there are oodles more at my finger tips. I'm nearly drunk with excitement
Kind of hoping that osecuroms will have a free stage 1 map available for the LGT/OXT by the time we're through the break-in period. I already ordered my new tactrix cable so I can datalog/reflash.
So is anyone here using these free tools to tune their LGT/OXT? Are you just doing stage 1 tweaks, or working with some hardware upgrades as well?

I guess this really depents on your comfort level.
Personally, it's my car, I can't afford to take higher than expected risks just to experiment. This is why I will stick with a pay for product that I know I can get support for and that someone truly (financially) has responsibility for (vendor).
Just my 2 cents.

If you can tune a car and do it correctly go for it. I'm switching over to this system as soon as I get around to it. I would say get a good wideband that datalogs, that is a must.

I love that this stuff is available for the community....
But as for myself, I +1 brother rony's sentiments. I'm not technically savvy enough to utilize these tools to truly tune my vehicle. With my "amateur-hour" level of understanding, I'd more than likely blow her up!

I would try them, but they do require entire ROM rewrites for each change, much like EcuTek. Whereas the AP allows you to play with the most power influencing table in RT, without using up flashes.
Now for the experienced tuner, this isn't a big negative. But to the upstart tuner, it may take many, many flashes before they get their tune the way they like it.

The software allows realtime changes, then you flash the rom. It is very much like EcuTek though. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who has never really tuned cars before. But if you feel safe using UTEC or streettuner or anyother user tuning system, you should feel safe using this software then.

So, while I am tuning, I can make changes in ram, then when I'm satisfied, flash it into ROM? If so, that's great news!

Everything I have seen is that realtime is not yet implemented/supported but is being actively developed. Yes, it will rule.

I was considering it until I read this off the site:
"At address 0x007FB80 (512kB SH7055 ECUs) or 0x00FFB80 (1024kB SH7058 ECUs) there is a table which defines the checksum areas.
The checksum algorithm is simply to sum the little endian 32-bit values in the address range from addr_start to addr_end, add the checksum_value to the sum, and make sure it equals 0x5AA5A55A. There is also some validation to make sure that the address range is reasonable."
Then I realized my dumb ass will never figure it out.

If I didn't already have Street Tuner and if the price of Street Tuner hadn't dropped to half of what I paid, I would consider using it.

Spec B,
I can grok that paragraph but didn't bother since I saw that Enginuity had a check box that caused it to do the right thing for that. I'd rather stick to the pretty UI than hack the hexadecimal
