Few questions on replacing the halogen DRL with LED DRL

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, creating this thread to ask a few simple questions since I'm a total newb when it comes to cars and mechanics...

Attached is a pic of my halogen DRL bulb that I am looking to replace with a LED DRL bulb in the near future...

In order to remove the halogen DRL bulb, do I simply pull it out or do I need to unscrew those screws first? I don't want to do something that isn't necessary but also want to do what is necessary

Once I get my LED DRLs, I can simply plug it into the connector socket (black portion) and push it into the opening of where the current halogen DRL is correct? and all will work fine?

Any idea what those OFF and ON text means? Is this the OFF/Lefty Loosey and ON/Right-tighty thing? Or do I ignore this?

Any little bit helps for a newb like me :)

Don't touch the screws, just twist it and it shall come out.

Twist to "Off" to remove the bulb. To "On" to mount the new.

Also realize that this is the main beam lamp so it's not just a DRL.

Thanks for the help and clarification on the bulb. From a previous thread I learned that this is the main high beam lamp as well...so will my high beams no longer work if I put in the new LED DRL? Or will it still work?

I rarely use High beams anyway...

This won't affect my HIDs and Boomerang light right? I like those :)

Your leds will probably stay at full power depending on which one you buy even when used as drls. I didn't like that so i bought a whiter color halogen bulb that can do low power drl and high beam.

Thanks. My understanding is though that LEDs last a long time so even if they are running at full power during the day it's all good. I only drive an 1-2 hours a day so shouldn't be too bad.

Any recommendations for the whiter color halogen bulb that can do lower power DRL and high beam? Link? I'm exploring all options right now :)

In my opinion main beam as DRL sucks.

And the dimming of them is with a resistor in series with the bulb so using LEDs will give full brightness and make it look like you have the main beam on.

yeah, it's a bummer that the high beam is part of the DRL lighting system, but the thing is I am okay without high beams because I don't recall ever using them... my HIDs should provide enough lighting in the dark, and I really want to get the LEDs as my DRLs since the current halogen ones are ugly. I even tried to find a way to disable them completely but I know I couldn't because it is a safety feature...

High beams can't be used often anyway...so i think I will likely opt for the LED DRLs, get rid of the high beams and just go with the HIDs as my main headlights during the dark and LED DRLs during the day...think it should all work out.

I bought 7500k HB3 (9005) bulbs which were a little bluish. I did the same with my fogs.

I guess you didn't try looking here? There are several threads where disabling the DRLs is covered.

Yeah that's true...but I guess I didn't really want to disable the DRLs due to the safety feature...I just wanted to replace them with cooler looking LEDs

fwiw, the LEDs listed in our thread of parts here

• XenonDepot True 9005 Base LED High Beam/DRL Replacement Kit

NEW 8/8/15

USE COUPON CODE XD15 FOR 15% OFF

When DRL is on, they DO STAY AT FULL HIGH BEAM POWER.

Also, when purchasing, you'll notice there is an option for "With or w/o DRL". I think that's kind of a sham because if you select with, it costs more and the only difference is they give you the CANBUS thingy to eliminate flicker. I installed mine w/o the CANBUS thingy and I have no flicker.

Thingy is the official name for those right? :p

Anyway, if anyone buys those, don't bother specifying "With DRL"...bulb output remains the same: Full blast.

@ajent420 - The DRL on the vehicle uses a PWM signal, which means that there may be a very very slight flicker -- which you may not notice. I would suggest getting the component to ensure you do not burn out the driver due to the pulsing power.

What "DRL on the vehicle" are you talking about? The OE DRLs on the 2015/2016 Legacy/Outback are implemented by inserting a voltage-dropping/current-limiting resistor in series with the ground side of each high beam lamp. The circuit is purely 12 volt DC. See attachment.

Would it be easier if Subaru finally integrate LED's DRL's in their design like almost every other manufacturer in the world...Come on Subaru...It's almost 2017...

On the Euro models the fog lights doubles as DRLs.

OK, I'm a little late to this parade. Like many others I don't like the DRL's and the C-LED's/boomerangs being different colors. (Subaru really screwed up on this)

All I want is an affordable bulb that will function the OE, just as long as it matches the CLED.

I've read about 20 threads and their appears to be as many options as can be.

I want to do this once and be done. I don't want a collection of bulbs on my workbench.

Thanks!

How technically savvy are you? IMO the end-all-be-all is this.

You get a crisp LED DRL, still retain full high beam use, AND you get some bad ass turn signals. It's just tricky because you have to open the headlights up.

Ftfy;)

For real though, mine reflect off of street signs hundreds of feet down the road:lol:
