BRZ tail as turn kit on Legacy? Maybe...stay tuned...

Recommended Posts

I determined the WRX kit was a no-go awhile back. Was browsing Diode Dynamics' website today and looked at the BRZ/FRS tail as turn kit and video for the heck of it and...wait...is that the same connector as...the LEGACY?!?

Could it really be? *Runs to garage, rips apart trunk*

Placed an order, stay tuned for an update when they arrive...fingers crossed this works...I hate returning things...:spin:

Wife has a BRZ and I like this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention! This is the kind of creativity that us Legacy owners need since not much is made specifically for our cars, but usually the more tuner preferred WRX and BRZ models.

From the link that Rowlette posted- "Please note: since you will be eliminating your turn signal with this mod, your vehicle will think the turn signal bulb is out. To restore normal flashing speed, you will need to change your turn signal flasher module, which is the part that controls flashing speed. The installation is simple- please see our video here. If you already have an LED flasher module, you will not need another one."

Since the 2015 flasher is in the ECU and not a separate flasher, I wonder how this will work. I know you can do the in line resistors which will fix this, but it's still a pain having to do that. If it will work normally without the hyper flash, I know this is something I would love to do!

I dont get the point.

So this makes the rear tail light act like a typical domestic car. Brake / Turn Signal.

Having Red Turn Signal is one of the stupidest things IMO and it is something only allowed in N. America.

No Thanks!

as long as it doesn't affect cruise control and eyesight vehicle it would be cool.

Umm all it does is route the turn signal power to the tail light instead. Shouldn't be an issue.

If it works, I'll be adding load resistors in to fix this. Whats nice is I'll be able to add them into the module instead of having to cut into the factory wiring harness. Better to cut up a $30 adapter than a $30k car lol.

I've had multiple people mention that it's hard to see my turn signal when I'm braking. They might just be blind or stupid, but I have noticed that just like with LED brake lights, the instant on-off of LED signals is much more noticeable than a fade-on-fade-off incandescent.

I could buy plug'n'play load resistors and amber LEDs to switch out the bulbs, but it's $20 for the resistors + $30 for good bulbs = $50. The adapters were $30 + $5 to ship = $35. Plus I can get extra backup lights out of it.

To each his own but I personally like the look of it better than a nasty yellow flashing incandescent. If only they'd make everything LED from the factory...

Got my modules today, the plug fits perfect! All you have to do is flip 2 wires as the tail/turn signal locations are flipped for the BRZ. Use a pointy object to pry a little tab down and the contacts pop right out of the connectors (pictures coming if I can get something to focus close enough), just flip the positions and push them back in place, super easy.

Red wire is tail light, black is turn signal. These get switched on both ends.

A load resistor will be needed to prevent hyperflash. Mine should be delivered tomorrow, will add more pics of how those get added.

I also plan on converting the old turn signal into either an extra brake or backup light. Not sure which I'll do yet, opinions welcome!

Any chance you can post a video of your "new" turn signals in action?

My vote for what to do with the old turn signal spot would be to convert it to a additional backup light. Might be super bright and annoying? I would be interested to see how bright two backup lights appear on the rear view cam.

Was planning on it, should have it posted tonight

Thats with headlights off right? how would it look at night when they're on and the tails are active?

That looks like the running lights are on. Doesn't matter if the headlights are on or not. The brake light and blinker would share the "bright" tail light.

GT is correct, tail lights were running in the clip as I had parking lights on. I'll get some more video tonight to show what it looks like in different circumstances (braking, turn signals, etc.)

^^^ yes! I'm gonna agree with this guy.

Red signals that are also brake lights is the dumbest idea ever and is illegal all over the world except for North America.

If you're signalling to merge, and also tapping your brakes, your taillights flash left right left right left right alternating, which confuses drivers behind you.

Domestic car manufacturers wire their vehicles like this and it's dumb.

It's a DOWNGRADE in my eyes, not an upgrade.

To each their own. When I brake while signaling, all the lights kick on like normal for a split second before the signal goes back to flashing while the other stay lit solid. It's not long enough to prevent it from flashing while quickly tapping the brakes, but enough to make it obvious the brakes are being applied; I'll have a video up at some point demonstrating this. Plus, the 3rd brake light is there for a reason, anyone paying attention shouldn't be confused since this is a fairly common setup in America.

Regardless of how it's wired, a massive, bright LED array is in no way a downgrade in comparison to a dim incandescent.:p

  • 4 weeks later...

Finally got around to converting the old turn signals into backup lights. Went with these bulbs [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P5X67PE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00]Amazon.com: (PACK OF 2) top quality 7440 7441 W21w T20 CREE 30w Auto LED DRL Break Back-up Tail Light 2014 #9gt20sw (White): Automotive[/ame] they're fantastic for the price!

I didn't want to splice any wires so I used the same method as the footwell lights. Pull off the connector cover and shove a wire in. This connector on the right side of the trunk is what powers the rear lights, it slides out of the mounting clip:

This gray wire is for the backup lights:

Ok...but all I can say is why:confused:

MOAR LIGHTZ!! The socket was freed up by the tail as turn, why let it go to waste? Plus I might actually be able to see through my extra dark tint backing up at night now
