How the heck do you remove the silver trim piece around the stereo? I can't for the life of me figure it out. I have the factory service manual with all the pictures, as well as the instructions for OEM boost gauge and illumination kits.
Is it just really hard to release the tabs inside the top and bottom of the upper vents. I don't want to break anything.

Open the little cubby..stick your hand in and make a fist. Pull outwards with your fisted hand in the compartment, this should un-pop most of the clips.

Use a trim tool and halfway up the bezel on right side is the best place separate since there is some give there between the two clips.

make sure you tape where you need to (top left & underneath head unit) to avoid scrapes

Yes, tape! Fisted hand eh? I will give that a try.
I do have some trim tools so maybe once it is started with the fist, use them to continue to loosen things.
I'm sure that once I take it off the first time and can understand how the clips actually clip and where exactly they are located, it won't be an issue next time. The little pictures and diagrams in the manual are just vague.

Grab the cubby door on both sides. Then pull toward the rear of the car.

Look as many times as I've had to take the trim out on ours for various reasons.
Anything other than fisting it is a waste of time and effort!
No protection needed.

Sorry, I wasn't wanting to take credit for making the video. I will edit the post. I just knew it was a good reference.

And once I put a gauge panel in the cubby, I won't have the cubby to fist either.
