Is 215/45/17 too small/won't work on the 2010 Legacy GT?

215/45/17 is too small, the tire will be too short. 225/50/17 would match the stock tire diameter.

even for snow tires it's too short, unless you want less ground clearance in the snow. and the 10mm narrower tire isn't going to make enough of a difference to be worth it in the snow.

Well the most important thing is that it is narrower so you don't float. So 225 is really the MAX width. So 215, plus smaller diameter (17") is great for the snow.
Sure 50's would be nice but 45 will work perfectly. I've never had an issue.

Thanks for the responses. I was at a tire/rim shop and they said 215/45/17 was too small and would throw off the speedo. I know 215/50/17 will work can I go up to 215/55/17?

so i guess going with 16s would be a problem too. the stock wheels are a little too large for me at times.
on my kia i swapped out 15s for 13s and i could peel out anytime i wanted.

it says 16 is not an option on Tirerack but I don't think I'd drop down to that size rim anyway

If a few MPH and your ODO is a big deal then I guess. But there is nothing saying you can't run 45's safely.
My Bridgestone Potenza RE92A stock tires = 205/50/17
I run Dunlop SP Sport 01 summers = 225/45/17 (stock on the 2009+ WRX)
I run Dunlop Winter Sport M3 winters = 215/45/17

You could, the diameter difference between the 215/50/17 and 215/55/17 is negligible.

you'll have a hard time finding a 16" wheel that will fit over the front brakes, at least with the GT

that's great, those tires are all within a few tenths of an inch from each other. The inch and a half between the 225/45/18 and the 215/45/17 on the LGT is a big deal.
Remember, the 2010 Legacy GT has taller tires than your WRX.

I am looking to buy a set of winter rims. Will 5x114.3 fit the Legacy GT?

Pretty sure that the 5x114.3 is for the WRX or STi. The LGT is 5x100.
