While I would like to say my wife did it the truth is that it was me. Was backing into the garage and broke the black plastic around the mirror. The coloured main part of the back is ok as is the glass and it works fine. Its just the black part around the mirror and some at the back that is broken to bits. $220. for new parts but I can't figure out how to instal them. If I could take out the mirror I would be fine. Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks in advance.

I think a year for your car would helpful. From there I'm sure you can get some helpful advice - such as let the wife drive from now on
(for 2013 you pop the interior trim and it's 3 bolts that hold the exterior mirror assembly on. The glass itself looks like you pop it off by sliding a screw driver behind it. We'll need to know power mirrors or not, heated or not.)

If you have the non-folding mirrors, I still have my mirror arms up for sale in the classifieds. Going cheap and might be all you need.

Its a 2011 Legacy 3.6 with power and heated mirrors. I saw the bolts which hold the plastic on but it seems the mirror would have to come off to get at them?? Thanks for the replies to date.

OK. So as long as your mirrors don't fold or you don't mind a non-folding mirror on one side, then my mirrors are also power/heated.

When you say the mirror has to come off, are you talking about the piece of glass itself? You could save a lot of trouble for yourself by finding some "vacation pix" here. Nudge nudge.

Thanks for all the replies but I have decided to have the dealer do the repairs. I stopped by yesterday and ordered the 2 plastic parts that are required at a cost of $165.00 plus tax. In talking to the parts department they showed me how to take the mirror off as mentioned here-removing the cover and undoing 3 bolts. Then you apparently have to remove the door panel to unplug the heater in order to remove the mirror in its entirety. Not sure how to get the other one all apart but I think it is mainly bolted on. However, there are several locking plastic tabs that I think clip in and if you break one of these then there is more trouble. Still not sure how or if the mirror comes out. Anyways, the dealer will do it for another $100.00.
Again, thankyou for your replies and next time I will post some pics.
