Unequal Length Headers (Borla Reps) would be a good start to get the rumble.

The difference is in the equipment surrounding the block. So unless there will be issues when taking the car to inspection you can probably do a lot of stuff.
The engine is a naturally aspirated engine so there aren't as much parts available for improved performance, but changing to a different exhaust system including headers would do a difference. But don't forget to do a tune too - that can make a difference even if you lack a turbo.

and am i correct that any ej25 header, from 1998 to 2004 legacy, 2000-2005 impreza/wrx, will fit? what about the CAI, the ej25 non-pzev air intake looks differnt from the one i have on my pzev engine, air filter box is next to the wheel well not behind the engine.

search CAI on MAF car and you'll find that changes done pre maf = bad
post maf = good
CAI will not work properly on that car. Changing anything pre maf or adding a full cai wiil cause the maf to read improperly and run very rich. Removing the "torque box" and/or snorkle will cause turbulances and resonances that cause the maf to misread and the ecu tries to over compensate. Changing ONLY the piping post maf to the engine and leaving the fender parts alone will yield the best result.

if im only changing the filter pre maf to one that has more surface area to get air from and changing the piping after for a smoother airway to the tb post maf, don't see that as a bad thing, but idk

i have one o2 sensor on each side before the 1st cats. my thought would be to get uel and reflash the cars computer to a 2004 non-pzev legacy, stock cat/mid section from non-pzev legacy, and aftermarket muffler. Think that would do the trick or to much work for little power gain and the subaru sound?? again just a thought. thanks

I have the same engine in mine. Wicked bummed when i found out but i think of it as a way to save money for a motor build. Id say just put on a muffler if your looking for noise. You wouldn't see any significant gains even with a custom exhaust.
