So, my LGT now has about 40k miles (its a 2010). I've enjoyed it and plan on keeping it for some time (it needs to last another 100k miles or so). I just put on new tires and feel like its time I do some other upgrades. The best upgrade that I think I've found is the Cobb AP, with an off the shelf tune. Is there any reason why I shouldn't spend the $500 on it?

That's pretty much what I expected to hear. Have you had any problems? Just running a standard map?

The only reason to not get a AP is if you want to save some money and go Open Source. With a laptop and a Tactrix cable you should be able to buy OTS Open Source maps.
I hit 40K miles on mine recently and started doing a few things as well. I have had my eye on a AP for the better part of 5 years. Since I already had a laptop, the cost of the Tactrix cable was only $120. I paid $125 for a pro e-tune from Shamar, and what I hear, are miles ahead of a Off The Shelf map. If you want to go OTS mapping, Infamousperformance.net also sells Open Source OTS mapping as well.

Open source tuning isn't available for the 2010+ cars.

If you dislike fun, boost, or bunnies do not buy the AP.

This ^^^. Additionally I would HIGHLY recommend getting a custom tune to go along with the AP (need the AP in order for someone to tune it)... the gains from a custom tune over the OTS maps are pretty significant! My results (stock map, OTS map, and custom tune shown):

Did you have any other mods at the time of tuning? I'm just starting to do some research into mods and what impact they have, but I'm having a hard time understanding a significant difference in OTS stage 1 maps and a custom map for a car with stock parts. And if there is a large difference, why does Cobb have such an underwhelming stage 1 map?

Fixed.
Cobb OTS maps aren't great. Spend the extra cash and get a pro tune.

The Cobb AP is a great tool to get you started, you can run the COBB OTS tune and then when you get bored jump to the Infamous eTune which will load on the AP, then go Protune which also loads on the AP. Plus you can log, monitor your boost, clear codes and all kinds of cool stuff with the AP.

If you'd like to make a statement that the forum is exclusively focused on USDM models I'll gladly step off.
I don't know why no-one has gotten a definition for the USDM ROMs through the system yet. I've gotten two EDM ROMs done now and tuned over 50 cars with them.

I had an Invidia CBE and a drop in K&N air filter, but neither adds anything significant to the power numbers... at MOST maybe 10hp/20tq from CBE, and from what I've heard/read the K&N adds virtually nothing over the OEM air filter.
OTS maps are very conservative, from what I understand... basically Cobb can't afford to put out anything that might get them sued, so they err WAY on the safe side.

I didn't say the forum was exclusively for USDM.
However, OP mentioned how many miles were on his car (instead of kilometers) and that he was interested in an AP, which Cobb only supports in US and Canada. I think its safe to assume we are talking USDM at that point
It would be nice if OS was an option for us, but its not.
