I have a 2011 Legacy with HK non nav unit. I noticed in 2012 they changed the head unit. Does anyone know if the 2012 unit will fit in 2011. Not sure if the harness is different?

The harness is different for the 2011 vs. the 2012 - you could probably make it work, but it would take some time - you'd need to fabricate a conversion harness of some sort.

Does the 12 radio sound any better? What I am saying is, is it worth spending a lot of money to get the same crappy sounding radio with a different look.

I have to agree with PrimeRib. Though I never tried replacing the radio in my 2011 Legacy, my dad has the 2012 Outback (yes I made my family into a 2/3 Subaru family, and my mom plans on getting the new Forester soon) and I have been able to compare the features between both cars. His Outback is the level package as my Legacy (both premium models) and the audio quality of his radio is noticeably worse. My personal suggestion would be keep the stock radio or consider an aftermarket radio if you are set on changing the radio.

I replaced my radio, all door speakers, and added a sub. I am now happy.

i cant stand my factory unit, its the base model so there is no nav or anything, for sime reason the speakers have too much bass, i have the bass at -4. im slowly building up a nice pile of new audio equipment, gonna wait till i have everything and do the install all at once.

I finally said screw it and bought a new radio, i'm not into the fancy radio, just want one that sounds good. I was at Best Buy on Black Friday, they had a Sony single din on clearance for 39 bucks and I jumped, this radio is 100% better than factory. For the price it isn't fancy but has great sound, aux input, and CD plus it's a Sony.

I've never been a Sony fan either. Always bought Kenwood up until this build. Their double DIN unit didn't quite have what I was looking for, so I bought Clarion. Very happy.
ETA: Yes, I know that my stock head unit was made by Clarion. Aftermarket is noticably better.

alpine is making a comeback, pioneer is starting to go down hill for the last 3 years, kenwood excelon units work nice but not a fan of the menu access and controls.

To each their own, anything is better than the stock radio. I've had Clarion as well, nice radio if you can find one, fact is, I paid next to nothing for it and i'm not using it to build any sort of a system.

Another vote for aftermarket. My JVC non-nav double-din is great.

IMO they need to come up with better displays than those simple 2 lines displays. They look like they are from the 90s... With that double DIN, there is plenty of room.
