After much reading on here about blown turbos I decided I should check my banjo filter for blockage. I have owned 2 WRX's an 03 sedan and an 02 wagon. These were the most reliable cars I have ever owned even at stage 2 and me beating on them once in a while. I have wanted a legacy for a while and just figured they were just as reliable. Now after all the reading I'm not so sure.
Anyway, i have the previous owners oci records and sometimes he would go 6,000 miles before changing it. After pulling the banjo yesterday it was surprisingly clean with only a few specs of debris. This makes me very happy. I asked the previous if he ever had it checked and he said no. The car has 111k on it.
Next I think I'll attempt the AVCS one, but I'm. Not sure when I'll have time for that. It may have to wait till spring.
Thanks for all the informational posts.

I pulled my filter out at 107,000 miles after reading all the horror stories and there was not a spec of anything on the banjo filter. I replaced the oil line when I went with a BNR turbo and used an FP inline filter. Knock on wood, but that inline filter has also been clean every time I have checked it as well. The Odometer now reads 146,000 and all is well.
p.s. I never exceed 3500 miles between oil changes and use Rotella T 5/40.

Did you VF40 blow or were you just upgrading? I can't afford a new turbo right now. The stock vf40 has to last me to at least summer. Then I'm going with the inline filter and a BNR turbo. This is my dd so I can't have anything happen to it, plus the wife didn't want me buying this car anyway.

I checked the BB filter on my wife's '05 GT yesterday. At 46k miles it looked like it was just put in at the factory. I couldn't find a single speck of dirt on it which made me happy. I'll check it again in another 50k miles.

Why not just leave it out?

I debated leaving it out but even BNR's web site talks about that and it's not good for the turbo either way. I am going to upgrade to an inline filter in the spring but for now this keeps me happy.

Wow only 46k on an 05! Glad to hear there wasn't any blockage for you either. I think if I was going to leave the oil line along I would check it every 30k just to be safe but that's just me. You are probably fine with 50k as long as you stick to 3,000 mile oil changes.

I thought the JDM motors never had it and they took it out altogether after the 06 models?
An aftermarket filter doesn't sound like a bad idea but personally I may go with a relocated dual filter setup. Keep the whole engine circulating clean oil!

No, I just upgraded. The turbo, after 107,000 miles was just fine. Change your oil often, keep it full and the turbo may be fine for a long time.
