Hi from a newbie. I searched the forums and Google but couldn't find anything useful, so I'm reaching out for the collective wisdom here to help me solve my brake problem.

I have a 1995 Legacy L 2.2 MT FWD, front disc brakes, rear drums. I don't think it has ABS, but not sure how to tell for sure.

A few days ago the front left brake locked up. I pulled the brake cylinder and even though it looked fine, I replaced it. The pads are nearly new. After bleeding it, the brakes on this wheel are still locking up. On a hunch, I checked all the other wheels and found the right rear wheel also locked up. The other 2 wheels are fine. Now I'm suspecting a problem with the master cylinder. I loosened up one of the brake lines from the MC and the wheels released.

Does this sound like I need a new MC? Is there a proportioning valve that could be the problem? It has the hill holder feature - could there be a problem with that component? A reconditioned MC is about $50. Would that be the way to go vs. rebuilding mine? I've never replaced a MC...are there any tricks to know about?

Thanks in advance!

What was the solution? Just for future reference.

I have the same vehicle that recently developed the same problem. I'd like to know what you did. I replaced the caliper and the rubber hose from the brake line to the cylinder, but no change. I've avoided locking the brakes so far by using a light touch on the pedal, especially when stopped.
