Our car has 36K and a good friend is a Subaru mechanic. He recommended flushing the rear diff to get out metal shavings and said they are basically worry free after that. The diff plugs take a 10MM hex head and are torqued pretty damn tight. Take off the fill plug first...to prevent complications later. It wouldn't be good to drain the diff and not be able to get fluid back in.
The drain plug had a pretty fair amount of metal shavings attached to the magnet. The fluid was dark, but had good viscosity. Refilled with Mobil Sythetic 75W-90 gear lube. I hate working with that stinky stuff.

How much does gear oil does it hold? May be doing this tomorrow. Not sure if it says it on the manual but asking here is easy enough

Can I put any 75w90 gear oil in and just be done or do I need to put any additives in as well? I am thinking about mobil1 or royal purple.

No additive needed on these cars.
Amsoil Severe Gear or Subaru ExtraS work well.

If the rear is due at 36,000 wouldn't you do front and rear at the same time?

Front diff on a 6MT is part of the 6MT. See earlier post.
For a CVT, the front diff is filled with 1.4 liters of
Subaru gear oil Extra S 75W-90 (GL-5) Oil
