I'm continuing the inspection of my 'new' 05 LGT and there's one further area of concern. It appears that the oil return pipe from turbo is heavily 'soiled':

The front-right drive shaft is out of the vehicle as a CV boot was torn and this might be the cause of the mess, however whilst I have a little more access to the area I'd like to check it out.

I removed the down pipe (and cat as DP-cat bolts were rounded off ) and intercooler. Although I removed the up-pipe bolts and oil/coolant lines I was unable to remove turbo, it would move a little but I couldn't see what was holding it in. Does the intake header need to come off as well?

How does the oil return detach from the turbo? Is it just with this spring clip on the pipe?

The nuts on the exhaust header heat shield are completely rusted so getting the up-pipe out will be a pain.

Any suggestions much appreciated.
Simon

PS. I did replace the CV boot and left LCA so yesterday wasn't completely about tearing the car apart (even more)...

i would recommend a new uppipe, i'm not sure if you have read or not on here but the 05's have a catted up pipe wich can deteriorate over time and get sucked through the turbocharger and from there you can guess what can happen... many people do a STI replacement for a cheaper route or you can go aftermarket for around 100-150 from venders on the site

OK I found this thread:
http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...s-53391p3.html

Post #35 suggests that you "reach down under the turbo and slide down the clamp that holds the lower oil hose on. It's easy, it's on the pipe shown here."

We'll have to see if that is the case....

Regarding the up-pipe; yes, it's almost certainly a good idea, however I have a few issues:
1). The wife wants the garage back ASAP - winter + diesel Jeep.
2). Need to get the car inspected (part of the import process), I have a deadline for getting it done and limited 'wrench' time.
3). Cash on hand.

So the 'reach around' wasn't that easy (even with driveshaft out of the way), but I got it off eventually

The oil return stayed with the engine block, it did not have a clamp at the top and was fairly well lodged in place. I can only assume that it has been seeping oil for a while, or that mess wasn't cleaned up after the first turbo was replaced (they 'forgot' to replace the heatshield after all).

Pipe looks to have a slight 'offset' in it, which might be just how it was compressed in place. Does anyone know what orientation it should be in, as I want to clamp it (hard) to the turbo outlet before replacing the turbo?

Also drained the coolant to fit a block heater.... deep 27mm socket doesn't clear the exhaust manifold - bugger!! Need to buy a shallow one.
