I am about to order a 2013 Legacy 6mt base model this week, does the STI short shifter work? If so, I will try to get them to install it as well.

No.
But there is a short shifter; it's an improvement.

The STi short shifter for the Legacy (not the one for the WRX or the STi) will work - it shortens up the shifts a bit and improves the shifting feel - definitely a nice update, but it's on the expensive side. (I have it on my car and am very happy with it - a little shorter would be nice, but it's a definite improvement over stock)

I agree 100%. It could be a shorter shift but considering its the only one out there it's pretty nice. I would do it again in a heart beat. The factory shifter is like rowing a boat. Have you ever driven a 90s pick up with a manual? That's how the factory shifter feels.

C'mon Jace, it's not that bad, well actually, it's pretty close to being that bad. I'm stiffening up crossmember bushings and trans mount first then deciding on shorty.

When you worry about hitting the hazard button when shifting aggressively to 3rd that's bad.

It's not as bad as driving pick up truck, my family toyota trucks have twice the throw Maybe its a little longer than average car but it's not something that I noticed when test drove my car.

Happened to me and a buddy of mine both before i got the short throw installed.
As others have said it's a great upgrade that every owner should make but it's not going to provide the bang for the buck that a lot of other mods would. Since you're buying the car new you can hopefully try to work out some kind of deal with the dealership to save on parts or labor since you're already buying a car from them.

I looked at my shifter this morning in detail. If you keep your hand on the shifter their is no way you going to hit the hazards. You guys are doing some sloppy shifting

Sometimes I shift with an open hand. That's when I hit mine.
