So, I have about 97K on the clock and I think my turbo is starting to leak more oil than I'm comfortable with. I have done a bunch of research and have found that my stock VF40 turbo (that's what's in the '05 LGT, right?) is rebuildable! (right?) However, I haven't found anyone that likes a certain kind of rebuild kit or doesn't like another kind of rebuild kit. Also, I see kits for an IHI RHF5, is that the same turbo? One other thing I couldn't find was either a good writeup, or a good video on how to rebuild a turbo. Any additional help or suggestions would be appreciated.

LOL, no, at least my husband keeps telling me I'm not.
I'll give Bryan a call, but I'd also like to see a writeup or a video if anyone knows of one.

There are a lot of threads and some sticky's about turbo failures and what to do.
I went with a vf52 but you will need to have the car tuned for that turbo. Which by the way is a good idea for the car even in stock form. The factory timing map is not perfect.
I think a vf46 is another direct bolt on too.
If you plan to stay at oem power levels, I would still go with the vf52 and get the tuned by a tuner. The tune is the most important part in keeping the engine healthy for a long time.
Subaru won't admit to that, but there is a ton of proof on the forums.
Oh I also removed the studs from the up pipe and used bolts the dealership gave me to install the turbo, it was much easier then the studs.
You should also have the oem up pipe removed and a catless one installed. It's much safer the nthe catted one, Subaru even figured that one out in later model years.

Thanks for the info Max, I will start looking into the VF52. I already have a catless uppipe from an STi that my husband gave me when he upgraded his headers.

So it appears you know what's your doing, good.
I ordered my vf52 from Mike at www.AZPinstalls.com, I had it the next day.
They are a little more money than the bnr16g, but this is a direct bolt in like the bnr16g but you can remove the banjo filter on the back of the head and use the oem oil feed line.
You'll be happy you replaced the turbo before anything serious happens. I did too.
