because the ''alarm system'' also works as the ''remote entry'' system,
the alarm module is ''spliced'' in to the door lock wiring.
i do not know the details,
but i know that it is.
so one way to correct your problem,
is to completely remove the alarm wiring,
and re-establish the original wiring for the door lock system.
the other way is to re-connect the ''alarm module'' .
by doing so the door locks will work properly.
and you can purchase an alarm remote key fob from ebay
and actually use it to lock / unlock the doors
and to arm / dis-arm the alarm.
this is just a guess,
(but it happens all the time with new owners)
the problem the shop had with the alarm is ....
when the battery is re-connected to a suabru with an alarm system,
the system assumes you are stealing the car,
unless you have a key fob remote or the actual key to the car.
so, climb under the dash,
locate the black alarm box, (mine is black, 97 GT and 98 obw)
find the multi-pin connectors that ''match'' the alarm" box,
and re-connect them.
(you should probably do this with the battery dis-connected.)
then, with the battery disconnected,
put the key in the ignition
turn the key to start and let go,
this will leave the key in the run or on position.
re-connect the battery
remove the key
this will let the ''newly connected'' (or even an old or existing )
alarm system know that you are not ''stealing'' the car.
you haqve to do this every time you dis-connect the battery,
if you do not have an alarm key fob remote to ''dis-arm'' the system.
if this does not work,
i cannot help you.
this also assumes that no wires were cut by the shop when they dis-abled the alarm.
but from what you said, it does not sound like they did.
