I've read quite a bit here on turbo replacement choices (fahr_side = amazing), but I'm stuck on something: why would one choose a vf52 (~$1030) over a bnr16g (~$725). Both seem on par performance-wise, both a direct bolt ons, both are going to have similar spool and respond equally to supporting modifications from what I gather.

I've seen responses that indicate a vf52 is better for an otherwise stock car, but for the life of me cannot figure out why this would be the case. I definitely understand that the 16g may be more productive WITH supporting mods, but don't see how it would perform any worse than the vf52 really.

I'm guessing that I'm missing a piece of the puzzle here because some folks clearly do choose to go with the vf52 for an extra $300. Can someone please fill me in?

Most of the people who have vf52's were bought from 09+ wrx owners who have upgraded their turbo, thus for less than $725 usually. Also, dealer cost for a 52 is around $700, so if you know someone, you can get a brand new one for under $800 usually.

That makes a lot more sense with those prices I guess.
