I'm not sure I buy the oil pump pickup tube was missing. There's no way it would last 3000mi that way.

I don't know about that, either... you'd think the oil pump would have a hard time building pressure with the oil pickup tube missing, but apparently it threw no codes and no warning lights were illuminated...
