One of the most frequently asked questions we get here at Underdog Motorsports
is what type of shock & spring setup is best for a given situation. With over eight years of experience with the BP/BL platform, and having driven on almost every spring and shock combination available, we have found that the Koni sport shocks paired with a mild lowering spring set represents the best value. Furthermore, pairing this setup with the Whiteline upper mounts will improve steering feedback, straight line tracking, and the return-to-center feel. With that in mind, we will be offering the following combo kit for the rest of the winter, until March 20th. *Sale extended until March 31st!*
Each combo kit includes:
1 set of Koni Sport Shocks (front & rear)
1 set of H&R Sport Springs
1 set of Whiteline Front Upper Mounts
* 4th Gen / MY05-09 / BP & BL *
Retail price = $1,525 + shipping
Sale price = $885 shipped!
* 5th Gen / MY10+ / BM & BR *
We have put together the same package for all the 5th gen owners out there, using the '08+ WRX Koni inserts, '10+ H&R LGT or 3.6R springs (your choice), and Whiteline KCA409 front upper mounts.
Retail price = $1,645 + shipping
Sale price = $950 shipped!
A little more information on the components (specific to '05-'09 platform, but may be relevant to '10+ as well):
Koni sport shocks
are a rebound-adjustable shock that carry a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer. The adjustment is made at the top of each shock rod, using a knob that is included with each set. We have found that starting in the middle of the adjustment (1 turn from full soft) is a good place to start making adjustments, and we will be happy to guide each customer in the process of dialing in the shocks.
The front Konis are installed into the OEM strut housing using their "cut-a-strut" method. I did a detailed write-up on this process when I worked for FredBeans a few years ago which can be found here
. If this process is too daunting then we can arrange to have the front shocks assembled into donor strut housings here at the shop. Contact me (Rick) for more details.
Also, while most customers reuse the rest of their OEM hardware, some may decide it is time to replace the dust boots, rear upper mounts, etc. As a Subaru OEM parts dealer, we can provide hardware kits with all the parts necessary for an all-new build.
will lower the car approximately 1.4" in the front and 1.3" in the rear. We have found that this varies roughly +/-.25" from car to car, mostly due to the weight differences of sedan vs. wagon, transmission, and trim level. Wagon owners should expect to use spacers in the rear to keep the stance level, and we can provide these if the customer requests. 1/4" spacers are usually sufficient, but we also offer 3/8" and 1/2" spacers. (Pricing: $25 for 1/4", $35 for 3/8", and $40 for 1/2")
When Koni set up the valving for their Legacy sport shocks, they designed them around the H&R lowering springs, so this pair is a perfect match!
Whiteline upper mounts
are made of a stiffer compound than the OEM mounts, and the reduced deflection will keep the steering axis inclination and caster angles more consistent during hard cornering. Additionally the Whiteline mounts add .75 degrees of caster and .5 degrees of camber which improves straight line tracking and the return-to-center feel, and reduces dynamic camber gain which means more grip!
