Hey guys,
I took my car into the subaru dealer yesterday. Got a phone call today that they can't get the car to keep running. They said that a fuse under the hood wasn't an OEM subaru fuse, and that at some point in time the car was boosted backwards which blew this fuse and damaged the "learn" function of the ecu.
They now want me to pay 1200 bucks for a new ecu, plus 65 bucks for an oem fuse.
This seems concerning to me, because I have never boosted the car, and they are the only mechanics that have ever worked on the car. Also, can you damage only part of an ecu?
Any advise you have would be great... I dont have the extra money to pay for this.
The reason I took the car in was because they had told me the head gaskets were leaking, so it was in to get that fixed.
Thanks everyone,

Follow up.
I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. There is only one subaru dealer here. The next closest subaru dealer is in Grand Forks ND, USA. I just phoned them up, told them the issue, and this dealership told me that even if the car was reverse boosted 6 months ago that it wouldnt be causeing a no idel / start issue now. It would have been something that the current dealership did while at their shop.
Still looking for advise / info...
Thank you

agreed. find a non subie dealer mechanic who can work on your car. sounds like you are being screwed.

I have been phoning and emailing people all over the place. In the end the ECU is screwed, I found a used one for 300 bucks including 2 day shipping to canada.
But the funny part is, the subaru dealer sent me a picture of the fuse that was bad, they said it was crimped together inside. Attached is the picture. I dont know who would ever do that to a fuse... but it wasnt me.
I have now talked to the service manager, the general manager, and the owner (who just purchased this dealership about a year ago) and subaru canada, the dealership is going to pay for some of it... just not sure how much yet.
They were trying to blame my aftermarket add ons such as HID's and a stereo.
Anyways, if you have any other helpfull hints, that would be great.

I crimped a fuse like that to limp my sister's car to a shop after her neighbor boosted it backwards. I was dumbfounded as to how they did that, and then even more so by not being able to get at the back of the fuse to get it unbolted. (it wasn't a Subaru) Her's took out the drive by wire throttle body, but a reverse polarity boost could wreck almost anything electronic. It certainly wouldn't kill stuff months afterward, it would be pretty instant.

I had my ECU replaced on my 09 GT and the ECU itself was less than $600 a year ago. Took almost a month though. They provided a loaner meanwhile.

Thanks guys for all the advise. The ecu listed wont work for me however since I have a non turbo, but thank you for posting that.
i ended up buying an ecu from pams auto in minnisota. 300.00 shipped to canada (most of that was shipping..) http://www.pamsauto.com/default.aspx
The dealership said they would help me out.. not sure what that means yet... but I just want my car fixed and out of their hands...
