Thinking about upgrading soon. Ive read so many posts about picking a turbo, have looked at dyno graphs and need to make up my mind soon.
Pertinent mods already acquired (installed or not)..
Perrin TMIC
DW 740CC Injectors - not installed
Walbro 255 Fuel Pump - not installed
Clutch Masters FX300
Cobb Catted DP
Bosal Upipe
Accessport V1
93 Octane Gas (no corn round here yet, NJ)
I think I'm leaning towards the BNR Evo3-16G. Really want a turbo that feels stockish in response time but can put a bigger smile on my face than my stage2 setup does now. I'm just getting caught up on buying something now and wanting some more later. As much as I like the instant response the stock turbo gives, it would be nice to feel what a bigger turbo feels like, but being I do most of my driving in the 2000-5000 rpm range, it seems I would be shifting just as an 18G or 68hta is starting to get going.
Never race but do get on it when I can. So confused.

Trade the AP v1 in for a V2.
It can load custom maps as a base map not just a realtime map.
If you have the pump and injectors go with the 18g or 68hta if you want more HP, in fact the 16g or vf52 will make a little more with those upgrades.
I DD my wagon and wanted good midrange without the fuel system up grades. My dyno #'s or on a mustang dyno that reads true. the car feels like it has more then the 280whp. It's very fun to drive on the back roads. It could use more up top, but how often do you drive in the 5-7000 rpm range ?
Think about the bigger picture if it's a DD'er.
My son has driven the wagon, he also drove the 9 second civic (avatar). He say's the wagon feels like a high 12/low 13 second car.
With my Tuners tune, it gets good mpg if I keep it out of boost on the highway. It's the car we take to VT every weekend skiing.

I don't follow what you mean about the AP v1 not being able to load custom base maps. My car runs a custom base & RT map with my old ass v1.

I was told that if the car losses power, you'll have to reload the realtime map.
I wouldn't enjoy doing that in the middle of winter.

gotta agree with max on this in regards to turbo choice. The VF52/16g are just about the same power wise, 16g will hold a little longer towards redline. I would go 18g if you already have the supporting mods. You will make some power and it will hit harder once you get into its sweet spot. Ive been in a wrx with 18g and its a ton of fun, the lag difference is not huge, but the pull to 6Krpms is sheer joy. I had the vf52 and it was fun for a dd turbo, if i had injectors i would have still gone that way.

Basemap / Realtime map function the same in AP V1 or V2.
Get V2 because V1 is no longer supported and V2 is faster, more capable, and more reliable.

You only reload a RT map if you are changing maps or if your ECU gets reset (battery disconnect etc). I guess it would be convenient if you had the v2 hardmounted for when you need to change maps. I have to get my v1 out of the box and connect it. Start to finish the process is less than 5 minutes. When I got my v1 it was a brand new thing (only alternative was ECUtek). I actually had to take a picture of my ECU and send it to Cobb via PDXTuning to make sure they had cracked the code for my VIN.

But I wonder how fun the 18g is when not WOT. Partial throttle driving around town when you need to pass somebody or are just goofing around at a stop light.
Stock turbo is great for most things besides highway runs it seems. And by great I mean at stage 2 levels and its throttle response.
The lure of that big rush of power is killing me, but I wonder how often I would be able to actually feel it on a day to day basis. I feel the 16g will give me the partial throttle power/response I have with the stock turbo and also give me some more power at highway speeds.

Could always find a local with the mods you're looking at and ask for a ride to see if you'd like it.

One of the main reasons I went with the vf52 was DD. The car is a blast on the back roads, lots of torque in 2nd and 3rd gears. The 16g should do the same.

Yeah I think that's where I'm going to end up. Seems to be the best fit for my day to day life.
Thank you everybody for your input. Now to work up the nerve to pull the trigger! :P

I find the TD05-18g 8cm on my wagon to be a nice compromise. Is is slower to respond than stock (what's faster than a VF40 anyway?), but it smooths out the powerband and doesn't seem to lose much around-town power. 18g power is not quite linear, but I always found the stock VF40 too abrupt at highway speeds, bouncing in and out of boost under cruise. The 18G does have a mild power bump at about 3500rpm in 5th gear, but then it pulls cleanly to redline. There is not a big hit / light switch powerband like I've had with GT30-class turbos on other cars.
I've never used a 16G, so I can't comment. But I suspect that a TD05-18g 7cm would work well given your description - give you a little more spool on the bottom at the expense to flow at the top.
Just my $0.02,
