So I had a coupon for Tires Plus for an entire vehicle inspection, including the steering system for $15, so I took the bait and brought it in. They call me and say that the pump needs replaced. I figured I might as well because I'm tired of this problem. They call back a few hours later and say that the pump didn't fix it, it's the rack and pinion. New pump and rack and pinion installed and the thing is turning like a champ. Even better than it was before, to be honest.
I spoke with the manager when I picked it up and he said that the initial problem was with the rack. Apparently it was grinding and shooting metal shards into the power steering system and in turn (no pun intended), blew out the pump. He said they actually blew out the new pump about two minutes into the test drive, so they had to put in a second new pump along with the new rack and pinion.
In case you're curious, the total cost of the pump, rack and pinion and labor came to be a little under $1,100. I think that was a fair price, but I'm not too sure. Good thing I was able to get 6 months same as cash.
