Hi all, I've been lurking around the forum for a while and finally bit the bullet this past weekend and picked up a used CPO 2010 LGT Premium with 10k miles on it. The finance guy was pushing the extended warranty pretty hard and I refused. I've always been a Toyota guy and understand you just can't kill it, they are just that reliable, then again I don't drive them very hard. Question is, and probably more for those of you who have owned a LGT and Subaru in the past. Is it worth it getting the extended warranty, given the more complex engine in the GT? How is the reliability of the turbo engine? And what did you pay for the extended warranty, if you got it.

Here is another option to an extended warranty. Check with your insurance company. Sometimes they offer something similar in relation to major breakdowns which my insurer called Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI). It covers the big stuff like engine or tranny failure. They only offer this for cars less than 15k miles and less than 2 years old to be eligible. Since its insurance there would be a deductible but that would be a far cry from buying a new engine or trans. This type of coverage for me is only $50 per 6 month premium which beats any $1200+ extended warranty and will cover me up to 7 years 100k miles. Your carrier might have something similar.

The 2010 LGT is my fifth Subie but the first purchased with an extended warranty. I decided to get it simply because my average RPMs are much much higher than with the non-turbo. Second reason was also simple; first model year. I have peace of mind knowing that if seats, radio, electrical or what ever has a problem it's covered.
Keep in mind the price on this can be negotiated.

Quit stealing my posts.
I opted for the extended warranty on my CPO 2010 GT. My previous vehicle was a Lexus so I knew no matter what it wouldn't be as problem free. Add to that it's the first year of the new design and an engine with a turbo and I said it was worth the money up front for the piece of mind over the life of ownership.

Hey Man I did the same, traded my 2010 WRX sedan with 6K miles for a Corporate car 2010 LGT Limited with 5500 miles on it.
6 Y/100,000 for free,
However before you guys start asking how the hell did he got it for free.,...
I purchased 3 cars from them in the last 8 months, a 2010 WRX, a 2010 LGT, a 2011 forester premium (Wifey). SO thats how I got it...
I agree with minuccims, first model, you want to have it just in case...

I agree, first model year may need some extra warranty to cover problems. The wife was definitely playing on the same side of the dealership when we were there. But correct me if I'm wrong, I still have time to decide before the 36k/3 years before buying the extended warranty, and I can shop around with other Subaru dealerships regarding pricing, right?
I'll check in with the insurance agent regarding the mechanical breakdown insurance.

I extended the warranty on my '10 to 5/60K with no deductible for $400. The finance guy was really pushy, I threw down the $400 thinking it would shut him up. Imagine my surprise when he said he could do that.
I think people have got 6/100K for not much more than $400.

When I leased my 2010 LGT it was a 42 mo lease so I added an extended warranty to cover the extra year of the lease and the Dealer charges me $300.00 for a 1yr 12,000 mile extended warranty and you got a 5yr / 60K for $400.00... I ******* got ripped off just like they ripped me off on my lease... I am never going back to Westchester Subaru again... I should have stuck with Mid Hudson Subaru... I only went to Westchester cause my in-laws purchased two subarus from them two months prior to me looking and I figured they would give me a good deal... Of course you don't figure out you got screwed until way after the purchase... Like I did...

Extended warranties are BIG money makers for Dealerships.
Be cautious...If the cost is low, the subaru dealership may be selling you a 2nd party extended warranty. This may require an inspection by a warranty rep before they approve the cost of the repair..
Personally I would put the $400 in the bank.

Why the hell would you buy a 2010+ LGT for a midlife crisis car?
You plan to modify the hell out of it?
It's the furthest thing from a Mid-Life crisis car.
Go test a few more cars.. STI, Evo 8, Corvettes, etc..

This is a good point!
Is this a second car? If so, at a LGT price point, you have a lot of options, and Bob mentions some good ones. You're also probably close in price to a new 5 liter Mustang. Or a used S2000, Viper GTS, M3, Boxster S, etc.
Even as a 1/4 life crisis...I dunno....My LGT is my Married with dog and soon to be baby type crisis car....

I got the extended warranty. The main reason is I have a 6 year loan, new model year and it was my first NEW car purchase. I dont have to worry about a damn thing other than oil changes and tires for 100k miles. If it turns out I dont use it I will probably never get one again. I figured im spending 30k anyway. whats another 1000.

True, but note the title, "quarter life crisis". No where near retirement age and my investments are not that mature enough to drop on on a more expensive vehicle. My mid life crisis vehicle would be a GTR.
But I think it's all relative. I am coming from a 2WD tacoma, living in an area with occasional snow, and soon one more kid. Two kids could will not fit in a corvette.

Are you guys talking about the extended warranty from Subaru or a 2nd party insurance? I got a mail from Subaru of America Inc offering me extended warranty for my 10 LGT. The extended warranty is called "Subaru Added Security". They only offer a plans under 5yr/60k for $564, or 5yr/80k for $1135. I've had the car now for about year now and we've driven for less than 10k miles. So I'm planning on getting the additional 5yr/60k for $564. So that is another 2 years, 24k miles of worry free stuff for $564.
Just wondering if any of you guys got the "Subaru Added Security" extended warranty, and your thoughts on it.
