the wife and I bought a legacy in July of last year I hardly ever drive it but when I do the steering seems so tight the when we are on the highway I'm wondering from lane to lane...now I drive a pickup truck so I know that aren't going to be the same but is there anything I can do that will give the steering a little more play in it? Thanks guys.

The steering is typically weighted toward the heavy side on the Legacy, like a BMW or higher end sport sedan. For example, I drove a 2013 VW Jetta for a month while my car was in the body shop and it had a very light steering wheel at all speeds. When I got my Legacy back, I felt like the steering wheel weighed a ton, but got re-used to it very quickly. I personally hate really light feeling steering. And when a steering wheel can be turned 180 degrees with a light touch from 1 finger at highway speeds, I believe that is incredibly unsafe. Short answer, your Legacy sounds normal for a Legacy. It just feels different cuz you don't drive it every day.

Don't blame yourself for the wandering. Most of us 5th Gen Legacy owners have had to deal with the "wandering" on the highway. It appears to be a combination of tires, rear sway bar (RSB) and soft bushings. Most have had success with replacing the OEM RSB with a stiffer one. The OEM Potenza's also seem to tramline on the highway contours and different textures more than most tires.
Replacing the RSB first has been the answer for quite a few folks here ... and its easy to DIY.

Oh, wandering. I though you were wondering. Sorry about that.
What BigBopper said. RSB and different tires. What model Legacy do you have?

Not the best write-up from a step-by-step perspective, but it will give you an idea. If you have a set of ramps, 12mm and 14mm box end and socket wrenches and some metric allen keys, you're in business for about an hour of your time.
As you will see in the thread discussion, many recommend going to the Whiteline 22mm adjustable rear sway bar. But the cost on that is about $225 vs. the 19mm Subaru unit which you can get for less than $100 new and probably less here on the forum in the 5th Gen Classifieds.

JJP71584: A simple 19mm RSB change from your existing 16mm unit, plus a set of decent tires, and your wandering from the straight and true will become a thing of the past. There are a number of threads concerning the tire switch. Many on the board suggest one of the Michelin Primacy series. Seems any tires that get you away from OEM will have a positive effect.
However, it is good to do the RSB change first. Remember on install, the RSB 'bend' goes UP.
Best.
