A Few Koni Strut Install Clarifications

LegacyKid5

Recommended Posts

Alright, I finally got just about everything for my suspension upgrade and I'm off school for the next month and trying to do the install this week whenever I'm not working. So with that, I have a few clarifying questions about the install before I get started. I've searched for answers and read through the walk through for the koni install, so these are just the remaining unanswered questions I'm looking to get answered. Just so everyone knows, I'll be using koni struts front and rear with swift wagon specific springs. So here are my questions:

1. I was told by the member who I bought the springs from to be careful not to over trim the bump stop, as he thought he did so and it felt like they bottomed out. My understanding was that you do not need or want to trim the bump stops at all, correct?

2. I'm wanting to use a pipe cutter to cut the strut body to get the straightest line, what size pipe cutter will I need?

3. I read through the Koni Shock/Strut & Epic Spring install, and just wanted to clarify; I need to measure and cut off 40mm of the strut body? And what is the reason for marking the Koni Strut at 46mm?

4. My car has all stock suspension pieces and has 82k miles on it currently, obviously it varies with each car, but should I plan on replacing OEM front top mount?

Hope these questions weren't answered elsewhere, I did my best to search! Thanks in advance.

1. you do not need or want to trim the bump stops at all

Correct.

2. Get the one that fits the front strut. I got a Brasscraft T005 at Home Depot. It should be adjustable from 5/8" to 2-1/8". It works great. I just used it again to cut some conduit and pvc today as part of a camera crane project. Definitely a useful tool for the future.

3. Just line up the roller part of the previously mentioned pipe cutter with the top cap of the OEM strut and cut. It will be the right length.

4. I'd do it. Also get new top spring perches.

Thanks for the response! Just a few other questions I forgot to ask originally...

So I've been doing a little research on whether or not bushings need to be replaced and if so which ones, but I've gotten very mixed reviews on whether or not it's necessary and worthwhile at this point. It seems pretty common for people to upgrade the LCA bushings, use anti-lift kits, etc. So my questions is, is it worthwhile to upgrade any of these and if so, which one should I be looking at?

The Whitelines have been very good for us in terms of the LCA Bushings.

Cut the strut bodies as high to the caps as you can. If you cut them too short, you will need new donor strut bodies.

With this said, we are floating the idea of making pre-built front koni's available for legacy gt owners. These would include brand new housings (probably KYB housings) and front Koni's already installed and ready to ship. At what price point would they be worth it?

I'd definitely be interested in this down the road, though I haven't done quite enough research to say what a fair price would be. Somebody with a little more knowledge will have to speak up. But potentially ruining a front strut trying to do it myself is enough to make me look for one pre-built.

Just pick up a set of donor fronts to do it on in case you mess up. I picked up some for really cheap on here

I know m sprank did this for a while, not sure what he charged though. You could probably pm him to see what he did.

Yeah, the difference on our setup would be the use of new strut housings, basically brand new KYB housings will be used.

Those are the prices that would make it worth our while to do the work and process everything. I'm not sure a lot of folks would take advantage of it but worth a shot.

Good point, didn't even think of that. Seems like an easy way to have a backup. And the project doesn't seem overly difficult, just makes me feel better that a professional is doing it. We'll see when the times comes. :)

Seems reasonable to me, Mike! Just the two front Konis are what, $350? Plus new housings and labor. But yeah, I'd also be interested to see what Mike at Infamous charged when he did them. Not that you have to charge the same, just for a reference.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I don't remember what he was charging, I'm sure he will jump in.

Where do I buy the rears to complete a set ?

We will be selling the rears as well, just as stated above they are shocks/coilovers and don't require labor to put them together (except for the install into the car itself).

Mike is that $573 or $519 for both fronts ?

I'd be all over that, (to bad I already have mine.)

Just heard from GTTuner, he hurt his back and won't be able to install mine this saturday. I'll have my local mechanic do them. He may charge a bit more but saves me the drive time.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

i would be interested as well, i have springs and donor struts but not sure if shipping them to you and back would be cost beneficial....

We don't need the springs. If you ship us back your front donor struts, we will credit you $50 for them so we can use them in future installs.
