dylandevine123
Hello I have a 97 2.5gt. When I hit the accelerator hard I hear a very high pitched whine or screeching noise coming from either the engine or an exhaust leak. I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix or what it is? SomethingWittyAsAUsername
My 2.2 does the same. At above 3.5k and with some gas I get a whistle. I do believe it's a split seam on my muffler. I'm not complaining though. Mine sounds like a small turbo spooling up which has confused a good many people
monkeyposeur
My 2.2 does the same thing and it has something to do with the exhaust. Maybe one day I'll get under there and fix it, lol.

Stang70Fastback
If it's a whistle that develops above 3k RPM (and more prominently when the engine is under load) then it's a common fault with every single one of these cars. They develop an exhaust leak somewhere around where the manifold is, I think, that causes that sound. Should have heard my car at the autocross last year, lol. Kennyfvholla
It's definitely coming straight out of the muffler. I've heard of it happening to many second gens with higher mileage, including mine. I can't tell you exactly what is causing the problem, but I can tell you that the issue is probably with the muffler itself. After I swapped on a WRX CBE for a little while I never heard the noise once. It came right back when the stock system was re-installed.
dylandevine123
Yea I am thinking of replacing the stock headers with some performance ones so hopefully that will end the noise.
dylandevine123
I had the tensioner break so i replaced and the tension is fine I dont think anything is slipping because i do not hear any steering related noises. Thanks for the help!!
