Your local cicuit (yes another driving road thread)

Recommended Posts

Post up your circuit, the road you go for a blast down when all you want to do is go for a drive. I was in just that mood this morning, so decided to do my favorite, in the GTB. It's really such a nice drive.

This link should work: Ridge road, Albany (Auckland, New Zealand). And now with street view! Check out the view at point C. Also, a youtube vid of a part of albany heights road, taken at point G a couple of months ago.

If you don't how to do this with google maps, find your road, and right click to add waypoints ("directions to here" and "from here"). Once done, click the URL button on the top right of the map, and copy-paste it to here to make a tiny URL.

Back when I lived in California, many years ago, I had occasion to drive this road, The Ortega Highway (which was the number one fatalities per mile road in the state). You go from about sea level over a mountain range about 5,000 high, then back down again, so the two dimensinal map does not do it justice. Most of the road is two lanes through canyon passes, with sheer rock outcroppings on one side, and vertical drop-offs of 200 to 500 feet on the other. Every weekend the jelly bean colored crotch rocket racers would run up and down in packs, making suicide passes around blind turns, occasionally going over the embankments, smashing into the mountain facing, or into the front of an oncoming car. Averaged about one fatality per weekend. Can't say whether this still happens, as again it has been years ago since I've lived there or driven (and ridden) on that road.

Waggoner's Gap Rd, between Caprivi and Bridgeport, PA. This is a stretch of several miles that follows Rt. 74. Beautiful scenery from the top, and a few really, really tight bends. One in particular, is more interesting as you head south (uphill). It's a 10-15mph bend that hairpins and then goes at a very steep incline. Feels like you're going straight up. :D

I'm a NH native, and a perennial favorite for all of us is the Kancamangus Highway, which runs between I-93 and Rt. 16/Spaulding Turnpike.

They used to shut "The Kanc" down in the winter, for snowmobilers, but haven't for years. Kind of a bummer.

Favorite area:

Roads around Blood Mountain in Georgia; Hwy129, GA180, GA60, GA74 to name a few, it's a great area.

A very good write up on the roads and sites is here: http://www.theblueridgehighlander.com/scenic_drives/north_georgia/union-county-scenic-driving-tour/

Second favorite area:

Roads around Deal's Gap on the North Carolina/Tennesse boarder; Hwy129 (same 129 as in GA!), Hwy28, Cherola Skyway to name a few, it's another great area just usually more crowded than Blood Mountain.

My local loop day trip... deserts to mountains to beaches! Ending at Pizza Port for a couple of beers and great pizza...

My old favorite Malibu drive... maybe not the Tail of the Dragon, but still damn good! About the only thing I miss about living in LA...

damn you west coasters. I need someone in the boston area to speak up. I've been looking for a nice twisty drive to do, everything around here is straight lines.

http://tinyurl.com/RIhome1 ... this is my drive at home. more of a scenic route than a twisty one. start at A and end at K, with a pit stop at the beach at F.

I've added some more to that second link. Click here.

Google Maps shows Reiter Road coming to a dead end, but it actually goes through to Index, and you can get back onto US-2 there.

Also, I'm going to propose this drive next summer for the PNW crew.

South of Wilkeson it gets pretty cool.

Also, this. A couple miles of that is dirt road, but it was smooth last time I was there.
