wyominggun
Just bought an 05 lgt with 101000 miles as is from an out of state dealer. Three days later and 300 miles later the engine spun a rod bearing. I live in rural western ny, about an hour from buffalo. Don't think there's much around here for import specialists. Also after looking at the receipts that came with it the car had turbo failure at 50000 miles and again at 98000. Both times had turbo replaced, pan dropped and engine flush to remove metal. This will be my daily driver so don't need 450 hp. Need advise on following. 1. Where to take or send my b25 heads out to for rebuilding. 2. Rebuild my block or buy new short block. haven't torn totally apart as waiting on cam tools to get off sprockets. 3. If buying new short block go with the ej255 or the ej257. Just wondering if there will be CR issues with the b25 heads on the ej257. 4. Do I buy a short block from one of the vendors that has replaced the rods and pistons with better than stock. Money is an issue so can't afford a 4000 short block. Looking at stock or one with forged pistons and aftermarket rods or is it not needed for a daily driver. I did buy an invidious uppipe to get rid of the catted one. Also turbo is shot, much play, even after only a few thousand miles so need one of the also. Any input and suggestions for reliable and reasonable head rebuilding and block choices are greatly appreciated. Thanks
chato
for a quick rebuild in a area without a top notch machine shop, I would think about a new EJ 257 short block. the subaru dealer in Co Springs has the cheapest short blocks I have seen, might give them a ring. I saw a direct link to their shortblock prices on here recently and they were super low. so low I thought about picking one up even though my engine still appears healthy. http://www.heubergermotors.com/
700watts
on the cheaps....buy a short block....either dealer/reseller. ej255 and ej257 are the same...difference is in the heads. plus check this thread out http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/sti-2-5l-turb0-engine-sale-197839.html
Max Capacity
If that's a true STI engine, you don't want it. Get a new OEM short block, they are like $1700 from the vendors on here. click on the vendor link up top in the long blue bar. I have a buddy who did my rebuild, http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/got-some-new-stuff-engine-r-r-184106.html if you contact them they will help you out if you need the heads rebuilt. http://www.eastwoodsautomachine.com If you want to use let me know I'll stop by and let them know your sending your stuff. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. rob-2
If no shop can do the work for you I would do the follow: 1. New short block - would get forged pistons if you can $2000-2200 2. VF52 turbo - lightly used or new $600-700 3. Do the work to save coin and bring beers for your friends $100 with food I'm sure there will be misc hoses and connectors you need to change so add another $500 for those. This will be a weekend project for sure. I'd lay the parts out in advance. Ensure you have an engine lift. Print offs etc.
boxkita
you can always contact one of the vendors on the forum and have them send you a built up engine using what ever parts you desire. They can ship it out on a truck to you. Build my car Boxkita Track days
wyominggun
Sounds like I will get a new shortblock. What block am i getting to use with my B25 heads. The ej255 block, ej257 from 06-08 sti or one from the newer sti block with nitrated crank. Sounds like all will be same in regards to bolt holes right, just newer block has internal modifications(crank) and such?
boxkita
cheapest you can find. Nitrided crank will be most expensive Build my car Boxkita Track days

boxkita
Why the need for the change in crank? OP wanted a cheap solution, then starting researching options. Pretty soon, OP moved out of the "cheap" category and into the "mah powr" category. Happens to everyone, doesn't it? wyominggun
Since the ej257 block is identical to my ej255 it should not matter which 257 block I order correct? So when I call one of the vendors say I need one out of a 2011 for example to get latest updated block? All my stuff will bolt right on correct? Sorry for all the questions but I'm not a Susie expert, you guys are. Thanks
Xplosivo1
Correct, the short block hasn't changed in that regard; it's the heads that differ.

wyominggun
I got ahld of him. You are right, great deal. But he says I need different pistons to get the correct 8.25.1 cr as those blocks would give me a 8.5.1 ratio unless you guys think differently. Max Capacity
IMO that won't make much of a difference, the Tuner will have to be more careful but that small change is not that much. If you were at 9.5 to 1 or higher then it can be more touchy to tune. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).
