stevenva
This is the 3rd time in the past 2 weeks this happened. The first time, the car started after about 10 cranks. (It had been sitting overnight) 2nd time would not start, (It had been sitting in the lot all day at work) I ate my lunch and tried a half hour later, it started the first try. Several days, starts and hundreds of miles have gone by between these events with no issues. This time left my car stranded in my driveway. (It had been sitting for 6 hours) It will not fire. The car has been cold each time. Cranking is not an issue. RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles
mailman
Can you hear your fuel pump coming on?
stevenva
I haven't listened for it. I'll check RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles
Ironcheflove
Sounds like the issue I've been dealing with too. I've checked the fuel pressure via a gauge hooked up to the out take on the fuel filter. Was slightly low so replaced pump and regulator since testing indicated both were gone or going. Then after replacing that I checked again and my hold pressure drops from 30 psi to nothing. More quickly on hot days. So I figure I've got a leaking injector, have a new set of Hitachi injectors on there way from Amazon. Checking to hear the pump is ok but even though you hear it doesn't mean it's pumping like it should be doing. Make sure and rent or buy a pressure gauge, it'll also help you figure out if it the regulator or leaking injectors.
mailman
If the fuel pump is dying it should make a crunchier noise than usual But checking your pressure in several places would be the proper way to do it
stevenva
I don't have a gauge at my disposal to check the pressure. I picked up a new crank sensor for $25. I will try it this weekend. The reason I'm trying that, is when the engine is cranking, I get zero movement on the tach. (and it's cheaper than a fuel pump) RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles

snederhiser
Hello; A failing fuel pump is #1 cause of a no start condition. Drop the return line on the engine and see if you are flowing any gas. This is the bypass off the fuel regulator, if just a dribble you can figure a plugged or faulty pump, Steven. stevenva
It was the fuel pump. I wanted to get a Delphi FE0342 pump with a FS0095 strainer, online was my only option. I need the car running ASAP. I had to settle with the only one in stock after checking all the local stores. I got an Airtex E3285 pump with a FS168 strainer. It'll probably last 3 years like my last one did. Thankfully it is fairly simple to replace. The pump has an access panel in the trunk behind the passenger seat. http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr85/smstavros/96%20Subaru%20Legacy%20Fuel%20Pump/P1010528_zps41b71828.jpg Under the cover you have access to the pump assembly http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr85/smstavros/96%20Subaru%20Legacy%20Fuel%20Pump/P1010531_zps2d1125c4.jpg Remove the nuts, hoses and harness. The assembly can be maneuvered out. http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr85/smstavros/96%20Subaru%20Legacy%20Fuel%20Pump/P1010532_zps73a107de.jpg Old pump. http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr85/smstavros/96%20Subaru%20Legacy%20Fuel%20Pump/P1010534_zps727c7823.jpg New parts next to old. http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr85/smstavros/96%20Subaru%20Legacy%20Fuel%20Pump/P1010536_zps300e2e79.jpg New pump and strainer assembled. http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr85/smstavros/96%20Subaru%20Legacy%20Fuel%20Pump/P1010538_zpsa8668f27.jpg Reassembly is the reverse of removal. (It actually did start this morning with the old pump. I had been unable to start it for the previous 3 days). I decided to let you know what the old one sounded like. Here is a photobucket link of audio/video of how the old pump sounded. http://vid472.photobucket.com/albums/rr85/smstavros/96%20Subaru%20Legacy%20Fuel%20Pump/P1010529_zpsf638fce1.mp4 RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles

stevenva
Edit: 51 weeks later... Cripes! I can't fu34!ng believe I went through another fuel pump. Less than 1 year. The only up-side to this is I know the symptoms of the failing F.P. The car still runs right now. This time I have the luxury of a couple days notice and Amazon Prime next day free shipping. Not at the mercy of Advance and the crappy Airtex they stock. I'm so fed up with this I decided to get one that costs more but will possibly last longer. DeatschWerks 9-201-0791 due to arrive tomorrow. 333,333 miles on odometer is just around the corner. Dancer
Did the Airtex come with a one-year warranty? Hopefully, you can at least get your money back for the aggravation.
stevenva
I believe it claims to have a warranty. Not sure how long? I'm guessing that they will offer me to replace it with another that will die in a year. I knew it was a cheap POS when I bought it. I don't intend on performing this annually. I'll accept it as a lesson. RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles
monkeyposeur
I installed a Walbro 255lph $100 shipped on Amazon with the whole kit. Over two years and no issues.
stevenva
Done http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr85/smstavros/Fuel%20Pump/20150902_1129481_zpsgxe7uwpe.jpg This was a little easier than other fuel pumps I've done on this car. No splicing. It came with a correct harness for my cars harness to the pump. Kit comes with new filter sock. $85 shipped from Amazon. Included is a decal that says DW to satisfy the ricers. DeatschWerks 9-201-0791 is 2nd gen Subaru kit. Not re-branded pumps, Manufactured in Oklahoma in DeatschWerks facility.
