Saga of the leaking sunroof/moonroof

I've searched and found no answer, so here it is.

 

My sunroof/moonroof leaks, and it is not plugged up drain tubes.

 

The sunroof/moonroof does not seen to close all the way, it has some play in it - on the highway, it openas bit all by itself via air pressure.

 

I've seen other threads where owners had the same problem, 1/4-1/2" of play in the mechanism when closed.

 

And when it closes, you can see light on the back edge - the same edge water comes in and lands directly on the seat.

 

Any thoughts or ideas - I've experienced soaked pants for hopefully the last time/ I've used wide electrical tape on the inside as an emergency measure -

 

Help!

wish i could help but i had the same problem on my old 99 gt sedan. the sunroof on my 98 doesnt work so its always closed and sealed tight! better to not work at all than to leak i guess.

 

good luck, this is a common problem im sure somebody has some ideas for you.

We had this problem with our 1991 Legacy Sedan - we found the solution on a Facebook post - the gasket in the sunroof assembly is known to disintegrate. It wasn't hard to fix, and cost us a single $5 silicone gasket tube and 24-48 hours. As you may know, no sunroof gasket is completely water tight, so there is a large pan that the entire assembly sits in that has four drain tubes. Between the sunroof and the pan is the gasket that keeps the water from entering inside the vehicle.

 

In our case, the gasket was totally disintegrated. This allowed the "normal" amount of water that would typically travel down the (unclogged) drains to migrate under the sunroof rails and into the headliner. If we left the windows up, they would fog overnight.

We spent over $500 buying special order, non-refundable parts from Subaru trying to "save money" by doing this ourselves. Although the driver's side weatherstripping certainly needed replacement, as did the broken driver's side trim (broken rain rail internally), our bet is 99% of the problem could have been solved with a $5 tube of silicone.

We had a similar issue on our 1991 Legacy - turns out the gasket that creates a seal between the sunroof and the drain pan it sits in was totally disintegrated. Finally had a nice enough day as well as motor-vation enough to take a look.

 

My driver side footwell was getting wet when it rained.

 

Thanks for all the info, here is what I found -

 

First, this was super fast and easy. Remove the sun visor and clip on both sides (driver and passenger). Then pull off the edging around the interior sunroof opening - not all the way, just the front and sides.

 

Then you can easily look and see what is up, here is what I found:

I took a pair of long curved hemostats and pulled the hose back in place - it was a snug, tight fit - took several tries to get it on far enough.

 

The other side was fine.

 

Reassemble and we'll see how it does, thanks for all the input!
