Is my starter motor going soft?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Is this a normal sounding start for a 2.0L auto legacy? Been sluggish like this ever since I bought it - I figured it was just how they are but a few things lately have me a bit worried about it.

I don't think the battery is soft I had a good 15 second swing on it with the fuel pump disconnected, holds over 9.5V and doesn't seem to deteriorate. Though not ruled out, will see how it goes jumped with a good battery when I can.

Engine is an EJ20

I noticed our 05 LGT has sluggish start, almost like its lacking battery power at the start.

I even bought brand new battery with highest cranking amps, it still does the same.

I posted on here a while ago and supposedly subarus are normal to crank like that.

After owning Legacy GT's since 1998, I don't recall ever thinking they are slow cranking.

I can't watch your video here at work.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

My first guess is corroded high-current lead or connections myself. A battery will fully charge with barely passable wires, but a starter will slow down if things aren't 100%. In my experience if the battery posts or big cables look iffy, they are!
