JDM HID with Leveling Switch Walkthrough

Special thanks to Andivic for getting the lights and switch, and for labeling the wires

JDM HID and Headlight Leveler Walkthrough

1. Remove OEM headlights. Remove grill and bumper as per this walkthrough: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57598&highlight=bumper+walkthrough. Unbolt head light brackets. Unplug main harness and turn light harness. Remove pop-it and bolt on top of head light housing. Pull the headlight housing out.

2.Install JDM HID housing. The JDM ones do not have the side prong to stick into the receptacle.

3.Connect the main harness. The turn light harness is too big for the JDM housing, so you either have to modify the housing or use the JDM socket part number 84931AG000. You probably need to order the corresponding bulb p/n 84920KE020. To make the parking/city light work you need to get p/n 84981AG190 and 784920080 or rig something up and connect to the main harness.

4.The roller switch has 4 wires controlling the leveling function and 2 for illumination. The four wires are +12v, driver, passenger, and ground. The illumination wires are +12v and ground. I connected the two grounds together and tapped into the closest ground. The +12v for the illumination I tapped into the illumination on the folding mirror switch (wire going in to pin 14, see the folding mirror walkthrough). For the +12v for the leveler I tapped into a switched +12v I had running to my radar detector.

5.Connect wires to the driver and passenger wires from the rolling switch and run them into the engine bay. I ran them behind the headunit and out the main wire harness grommet.

6.The leveling motors have three wires, +12v, ground and signal from the rolling switch. Run the wires from the interior compartment to the corresponding headlight housing and connect to the corresponding wire.

7.I used local grounding points and connected to the ground wires of the leveling motors. I tapped into the +12v I had going to my Hella horns to connect to the +12 wires of the motors.

8.Tidy up with zip ties and you are done.

Awesome feelander. I was making my own connectors with epoxy. This will be a lot easier to get the Toyota parts.

I had told you that I would get a complete walk through together for the JDM headlights, but then I got shipped out to Iowa on business at the beginning of Feb.

I still have not completed my JDM project, the leveling switch sits at home waiting for my return, but man do I love the JDM blue chrome with the black background. It makes my black lgt look a lot better.

No listing for the 08-09 style :(

PM him, he can definitely get them - I enquired about a set a few months back and he gave me a price. I was going to get them, but decided I would go the EDM route - they are self-leveling.

For self-leveling you need to install a sensor on the driver's side of the car. More work. I have JDM lights with USDM shields; as you can see from the video the pattern is correct and the cutoff is sharp.

I put rx330 projectors into my stock light, but they form condensation when it rains... I have re glued them three times... This is why I just want to get factory sealed EDM HID, that way I don't have to open them up

How much are EDM HID headlights and where do you get them?

Thanks for that information, I forgot about that.

When you say "flip the shields", is it literally as simple as it sounds? I strayed from the JDM HIDs because I didn't want to start opening the headlamps and messing around with things; I've seen a few horror stories on the forum.

Also, does your roller switch fit in the OEM blank spot next to the light brightness roller?

Yes it is. The glue on my JDM HIDs was easy to remove, you may need to use a razor blade on some of it, but once you get the lens off, you can easily pull all the remaining glue out. It doesn't leave any remanents. Kinda like that clear (except the headlight stuff is grey) sticky stuff they use to hold samples of products on the covers of magzines.

I have complete pictures from my install showing that that I hope to post soon, and I mean I have every picture you could image during the install in hopes of putting together a walkthrough. Then I just got some RTV rubber weather stripping, put it around the HID ballast cover and in the grove where the headlight glue usually goes and screwed everything back together. It was very easy and I have not had a single leak for 6 months. Plus now I can just open them up by removing all the screws around the lens.

Really? Thats awesome! Looks like JDM or EDM(If I can find some) HID is in order for me!

So all that needs to be done is the shield flip?

Then for the autoleveling, I follow this walk through and auto leveling factory HID!! w00h00

No not auto levelling, but manual-levelling with 6 positions.

Auto levelling requires additional front and rear sensors and ecu.
